Neko, you and I have the same idea. I'm re-reading all of those free Nebula nominees from back in the Spring. I rushed the first time through, but am taking my time to enjoy them this time around.

Just finished Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom. Was nowhere as good as Little Brother. I went back to The Baker's Boy... but it seems to be having a slow start. Perhaps it will get a bit better now that some things have been revealed.

Have seen the old BBC version, and have the entire collection of books, but can't exactly remember if I read it before or not, some time in the dim and distant past. Definitely not hurting to read it again of course.

hmm. perhaps it's not a good idea for me to have chosen Down and Out as my first foray into Doctorow-land. we'll see how it goes. i'm going to take this reaction as ample justification to drop the book, if i find myself slogging. i haven't gotten any farther with it, since i only read that book in the métro, and i haven't needed to take the métro in past few days.

E.g. the identity of Time's son(s).
I read the books when they were published and I think Thief of Time was very good. From The truth all Discworld books have been very good.

Some books I did not like so much was Witches Abroad, The Last Continent and Carpe Jugulum.

Interesting. I actually liked Witches Abroad, just for the "fairy godmother" concepts (and Granny Weatherwax, of course). But not as much as any of the Tiffany Aching stories, or Thief of Time.

The nice thing about reading books that cost me nothing more than a bit of download time to read is that I don't feel guilty not finishing it. That said, I did finish the book. You won't miss anything by not reading it. Life's too short and there are too many good books out there.

If it isn't catching your attention I would say use the delete key.

However, once again, I highly enjoyed Little Brother... also available as a free eBook under the Creative Commons license.

I liked Doctorow's Eastern Standard Tribe. The one Doctorow book I have not read yet but friends have claimed is very good and have literary qualities is Someone Comes to Town. Someone Leaves Town.

Finished: Asimov's March 2008
Reading: Rainbow's End by Vernor Vinge (So far, it's OK. Not great, not bad. Knowing this author, I expect it to pick up the pace pretty soon!)

I liked Someone.... It was the first (so far only) Doctorow book I read. Very quirky, though.

I love this entire series!

Since my last post in this topic, I have finished reading:
60. Emily Climbs by L M Montgomery, formatted for MobiPocket by Justy
61. The Right Hand of Amon by Lauren Haney, a mass-market paperback
62. Soothsayer by Mike Resnick, purchased in MobiPocket format from FictionWise
63. In the Bleak Midwinter by Julia Spencer-Fleming, a free "purchase" from Amazon

I'm currently reading:
  • A Fountain Filled with Blood by Julia Spencer-Fleming, a free "purchase" from Amazon
  • Titan by Ben Bova, mass-market paperback which I owe to a fellow book-trader
  • Love Over Scotland by Alexander McCall Smith, unabridged CD -- I'm at disk 10 of 16.

The next book I am going to finish is Honor Bound by Keith R.A. DeCandido. It is the second Star trek book in the I.K.S. Gorkon series.

Reading?

reading? Well, I've been so busy downloading books, I haven't had much chance to actually READ, however, I have just finished two classics...Robert Bloch's "This Crowded Earth" and Rex Stouts "Under the Andes" I can't wait to see more of both authors on here. Even tho Mr. Stouts book was written in 1919, the story was easy to follow, and kept my interest. "This Crowded Earth" answers the question "what would happen if, instead of dealing with overcrowding by population control, someone decided to 'downsize' people?" Like in music, great authors/composers withstand the test of time.
