2022 was not too bad for me, only 31 purchases, and I refused some offers I wouldn't have refused in the past. Just the ill-advised bundle purchase that was a real spanner in the works. I feel I might be on top of it.

I also managed to start most of my new purchases. I didn't get to a couple of sequels that I'm not in a position to start (and therefore shouldn't really have bought), one of the bundle books I wasn't that interested in, and one or two more I have no excuse for, but I've been much better about not buying things to squirrel away for some distant future.

Although I have just bought an omnibus of 5 books (2 already read) that's been on offer for a week or so, and I was hoping would still be on offer when the calendar rolled over. It's four or five years since I read book 2, so there probably wasn't that much of a rush. And it's unlikely I'll read all three this year.

I won't go into how many books I bought last year versus how many of them I read (too depressing), but will celebrate instead the joy of buying only one book on Jan 1, 2023, compared to the 7 books I bought on Jan 1, 2022. I take my victories where I find them

For the past 5 years (excluding 2022), I was buying on average 30 books a year, but last year I bought more than twice that! I blame this aberration on 'excessive' gift card money and feel confident it won't happen again this year

Once again, in 2022, I bought more ebooks and audiobooks than I could possibly read/listen to in a year. A lot fewer than in 2019 and 2020, but still too many. I could use excuses like a lot was series fill-in, which is true, but I'm never going to get to the books I bought already if I keep buying more. So, again, the goal this year is far fewer books and restricting them to only favorite authors or fill in. I'm an avid user of ereaderIQ, so I do spend less for the books I do acquire as I can wait!

For what it's worth, I added 851 books to my collection during 2022. If i split the various omnibuses up, this would end up as 904 books.

I still have 3 books left to be read from my Christmas spending spree.

Not sure if I would call myself obsessive, just someone who reads a lot. I entered 2022 with 5 books unread and exited with 3 books unread.

My actual reading was down a bit (-10%) this year, and I "bought" more books than I read. But many of those books were freebies, so my total spending was down. Though I did get a bit of a hit in both spending (up) and reading (down) with the acquisition of several "reference" works. These are books such as knitting books or cook books that I refer to, may do an actual recipe out of, but don't actually sit down and read.

I am hopeless. Spent too much in 2022. I am going to try to use overdrive more. Sad. I placed a hold on Spare by Prince Harry and its a 124 week hold

Looks like I purchased 46 ebooks from Kobo in 2022, and about 12 from Amazon. Average price was still $1.99-$2.99, so at least it wasn't that expensive.

I'm omitting all of the comics and graphic novels, though. Otherwise I'd have to count all 40 volumes of Berserk...

2022:

159 new books purchased (!)
115 of those were freebies (phew...)

60 on Kobo (38 freebies), 95 on Kobo (90 freebies), four on Baen (3 freebies). Additionally, 45 Overdrive loans. I should really expand what sites I buy from.

66/145 books read, not counting cookbooks. (not so good...)
41/45 non-freebie books read, and one currently reading (okay, a bit better)

Most common genres: Science fiction (100 books), cozy mysteries (18 books), cookbooks (18 books) horse books (11 books). A huge change from 2021, where cozy mysteries predominated.

I still haven't completely filled in all the prices from my purchase history (just the freebies so far). I'm a bit scared to see the number.

I have actually started dealing with my book addiction another way:
Today i weeded out 300+ ebooks from my library. That was SCARY! But it felt so good afterwards!
Most of them were from my early e-book reading days when freebies and sub-10-cent books had me overindulge a bit (if you can overindulge "a bit"?). I am NOT throwing away books I have read and enjoyed even if the likelyhood I will read them again is near zero. I like to just HAVE them, just like my paperbooks in my bookshelves.
Knowing myself this will probably act as an excuse to add new books, but hey, I feel good today!
(And I also feel good about having returned to MR after a long absence! Life steered me to other things than reading for a long time. But some things you just can't stay away from forever. Said the addict... Oh wait... There's a book that looks interesting. And not that expensive... Sorry. Lost my focus there...)

The Kobo store thinks you “own” a book when you have it checked out through Overdrive. And that's the story of how I prevented myself from spending $2 on a book I haven't read yet. At first I was disappointed, but I realized, maybe I just saved myself $2 – and if I like it, it's sure to go on sale again eventually.

Meanwhile, I'd better get back to my loan.

Many of us have done this eventually. It is hard, but you feel so satisfied after. I'm way more picky about taking freebees now.
