Still enjoying The High Window, and I read a free novella from Baen books last night, thanks to a recommendation on MR. It's called The Mountains of Mourning, and was very good. I immediately bought another book in the same series and look forward to reading it next.

I read Raymond Chandler "Playback" this weekend - a more somber, cynical tired Marlowe. Very introspective - and the prose styling wonderful.

If You Like Thrillers......
I just finished reading The Darkness Drops by Peter Clement. It's a thriller and it's the first book of his I've read. It's got everything I look for in a book - great pacing, rich characterizations and flawless plotting. It's about a biological attack and it feels very real. You could easily imagine this actually happening. I would love to see this book made into a movie.
I believe it's available in all e-book formats. I read it on a Kindle and now I've just purchased 3 of his earlier books too. I hope they're as good as The Darkness Drops. |

I've started Runemarks by Joanne Harris. It's an fairy tale for adults and teenagers in a style somewhat like Neil Gaiman's Stardust or Neverwhere, but quite its own, too. She's based a good deal of her "world" on Norse mythology - after Ragnarok, no less - and on northern European folklore, in a quite unique way. It's a delight to read.

Thank you Ea, sounds like something right up my alley. Only problem now is that I got way too much to read at the moment, what a luxury problem
![]() Norse mythology is fantastic. Took the liberty to add the book link on Amazon. Hmm let's see less time on MR and more time reading. If only MR wasn't so addictive ![]() Last edited by thinkpad; 08-03-2010 at 02:55 PM. |

It is, it is. Have you read Norrøn Religion by Gro Steinsland? Non-fiction, but very readable and accessible without dumbing things down, and it reflects more current and modern research than most books available on Norse mythology and religion. |

I haven't read this one, but it certainly looks interesting. Time to take a trip to the library this weekend.

Finished "The Long Goodbye" today. Chandler is every bit as good as I want him to be when I read a book by him every few years. Marlowe's outlook in the future of America is grim, but then again, was he wrong? This one felt like Chandler was wrestling with the fun of a detective yearn and the need to show post-war America for what it was turning into. Can't wait to get into the discussion of it!
An aside: I read this in paperback because I felt paying close to $10 for a PDF with DRM was too much for a 60 year old book. I haven't had the e-reader all that long, but I am already far more comfortable reading on it. Holding a book and trying to keep pages open just felt like too much work, now that I no longer have to. Get those backlist titles out there for $5 a pop, publishers, even with DRM, and I'll be all over it! ![]() Moving on to Oryx and Crake now by Atwood. Been a few years since I've read her as well, and she's another favorite. August has been a good reading month so far, and it just got started... |
