Checking around, there are two titles. The novella mentioned, 80 pages for £0.99 and a collection, priced at £3.99 ($3.99 in the US) that includes the novella and seven other stories. Seems to be a pretty good deal.

For some reason, the UK version is listed at a hundred and fifty pages longer (and quadruple the file size). Looking at the description, though the contents appear to be the same, but using Look Inside, the contents are different. Very confusing:

According to Barzun & Taylor's Catalogue of Crime, the original Killer in the Rain collection (published 1964) contained 8 stories with an introduction by Philip Durham.

I suspect the U.S. version on sale is a bootleg. There is no publisher indicated and, though its cover appears similar to the UK edition, it has been noticeably altered to remove the Penguin logo. It does, however, include the original Philip Durham introduction. Still... Buyer beware!

Oh, good catch! I usually check these things. But the two editions looked exactly the same and I didn't research beyond the matching covers.

About the UK ebook edition:

The full title of the book is Killer in the Rain and Other Stories, and was published in 1964. (The ebook apparently fails to mention the complete title of this short story collection on the cover, neglecting the words "...and other stories".

About my U.S. ebook edition:

My ebook contains only the story [novella], Killer in the Rain.

Here is the copyright information from my ebook edition:

"Selected from Killer in the Rain and Other Stories, published by Penguin Books 2006. This edition published in Penguin Classics 2011"
.

The copy I have, based upon the clarification that this is only one story [novella] from the collection, makes it clear that - at least - my ebook copy is legitimate.

About the U.S. ebook listing under discussion:

Yes, it does appear, as BetterRead notes, that the specific listing under discussion is most likely a bootleg edition.

I can't refresh your memory about why , but I have the same general good feeling about the series from reading a bunch of the titles in DTB many many years ago.

I did find an interview online that comes with an informative introduction.

Two more Dead End Job mysteries by Elaine Viets are free right now at Kindle US and UK. These go free pretty often, so I'm mostly not posting them. However I haven't seen Half-Price Homicide go free before individually - although it has been free as part of an omnibus. But for those of you who prefer separate books and don't want to have to take the time to separate them out of an omnibus, here you go...

The Black Mountain is about half-way through Rex Stout's Archie Goodwin/Nero Wolfe series. It has dropped to $1.99/£1.49 in the US/UK. It's pretty rare for titles in this series to go on sale, so grab it if you want it.

Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-black-mountain
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004SOQ1XY

Spoiler:
Quote:
When Marko Vukcic, one of Nero Wolfe's closest friends, is gunned down in cold blood, the great detective takes it personally, pledging to do everything in his considerable power to bring the killer to justice. But Wolfe's reckless vow draws him to the most lethal case of his career, propelling the portly P.I. and his faithful factotum, Archie Goodwin, four thousand miles across the ocean to the hazardous mountains of Montenegro. Communist cutthroats and Albanian thugs have already disposed of Wolfe's friend and Wolfe's adoptive daughter . . . now they're targeting the world-famous detective himself.

Sins of the Fathers is the most recent (until the new one comes out next February) in JA Jance's JP Beaumont series. It has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07H512J3C
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/sins-of-the-fathers-30

Spoiler:
Quote:
Seattle investigator J. P. Beaumont is drawn into an intriguing, and shockingly personal, case in this superb tale of suspense from New York Times bestselling author J. A. Jance.

Former Seattle homicide cop, J. P. Beaumont, is learning to enjoy the new realities of retirement doing morning crossword puzzles by a roaring fireplace; playing frisbee with his new dog; having quiet lunches with his still working wife. But then his past comes calling.

When a long ago acquaintance, Alan Dale, shows up on Beaus doorstep with a newborn infant in hand and asking for help locating his missing daughter, Beau finds himself faced with an investigation that will turn his own life upside down by dragging his none-too-stellar past onto a roller-coaster ride that may well derail his serene present. It turns out that, even in retirement. murder is still the name of J. P. Beaumonts game.

This is a wide-ranging collection of stories and styles with authors from around the world. I enjoyed several, and Mick Herron's titular story may be worth the buy on its own.
