Well, not just Jim Butcher; CE Murphy and Charles Stross were equally engaging on The Ultimate Urban Fantasy Panel, but I’ve seen them both before: for me, this was my Jim Butcher introduction, and I’d happily listen to him again.



The panellists began by stating that editors have been saying for over 10 years now, that Urban Fantasy is dead.

Then they suggested that perhaps what editors were really talking about was Paranormal Romance.

I think there are plenty of readers out there who would disagree with both statements, hmm?

Congratulations to Jim Butcher for his second Hugo Nomination, and his first in the Best Novel category! Yes, Skin Game made the Hugo short list! Sorry to burst your bubble, but the 2015 Hugo awards have been gamed and Jim's nomination is one of the gamed nominations. So even if he wins, he doesn't really win. Please see the thread on the issues surrounding the 2015 Hugo awards.

You are saying what? Even if he wins he still wins whether his nomination was or was not gamed. I hope he wins, just to see the look of disgust in your face.

Personally, I take every awards "show" whether it's literature, movies or games with a huuuuuge grain of salt anyways. They're all gamed somehow or other.

Eastercon 3rd-6th April

I’m going to be going to the London Eastercon this year! It’s on from 3-6 April at the Park Inn at Heathrow. Schedules aren’t finalised but I should be on the ‘Watching the Detectives’ panel on the Monday 6th – everything else is up in the air. Will post more when I have the details.

Jim Butcher’s also going to be there (and on the same panel), so I’m hopefully going to get to meet him for the first time, which is pretty exciting. Other than that I’ll be wandering around on the Monday, so if you want to meet up, send me a message!

Sometimes I still don't know exactly how to differentiate the two.

According to the article,

CE Murphy’s opinion, which I also agree with, is that UF focuses on world building, while PR is about relationships.

But some PNR can be pretty strong on world building too, no? Well, I don't read a lot on both accounts, so I can't argue much.

It can be pretty strong, maybe -- but the differentiating factor is, what is the focus, i.e. is the book about the world building, with a heavy dose of romance on the side, or is it about the romance, with a heavy dose of world building?

What is the plot?

Any book on either pathetic puppies list that wins only means that they were used and they were not truly deserving of a Hugo. These groups are using these books to game the system and to embarrass anyone they put up for nomination. I'm hoping that Butcher does not win as it's a black eye if he does. These two pathetic puppies groups put up books for the Hugo that would never have gotten award other than being in the list they used to game the system.

Thank you for explaining it in so much detail. I didn't know that any book automatically becomes not truly deserving of a Hugo simply by the fact that it is on a puppies list. Let's see next year, they should put only books on the puppies list that are deserving of a Hugo. Would you still call that gamed? Of course you wouldn't. You only call it gaming the system when it is convenient for you. It is also convenient for you to post nonsense anti-Butcher propaganda in a thread that is dedicated to .... tada .... *drumroll* ... Jim Butcher and his works. It is not like you don't like Butcher, you say so openly that you do enjoy his books. That should be award worthy all by itself. Wow, look, this book is enjoyed by JS Wolf.

And yes, if you didn't catch that, there is some sarcasm in what I said. Do I think that it is a gigantic waste to argue with you? Oh, absolutely. Somebody gotta do it though.

What happened at Eastercon 2015

...the guests of honour coming from America had a much worse trip. This involved having their plane return to the airport as they didn’t have enough fuel to fly around a storm. As a result they arrived late and had been awake for a very long time. At the end of his first panel, when Jim Butcher was asked for any closing thoughts it consisted of ‘I’m very tired’ which was fair enough after being awake for 30 hours!

I second that. It is okay to be up for 30 hours, IF you chose to do so. But not if it is forced upon you.

Plane out of fuel? Reminds me of this:

- Do you know where the on/off button is?
- Do you know where the fuel cap is?

If you know, then it is funny, if not, then you missed what Bill Engvall was doing there ...
