That was touched on in the animated movie "Justice League - The Flashpoint Paradox." Barry Allen (The Flash) ends up in an altered world and he's the only one who knows that something is wrong...and he is not The Flash. Throughout the movie he has moments of intense mental pain where his memories are being altered to reflect the new timeline he is in (such as his memory of joining the Justice League being changed to a memory of him joining the Police Force). He has to hurry to find out what changed and to change it back before he loses all of his original memories...and the world is destroyed.

Considering the sheer number of possible variations, the size of the cube would have to be massive (a cube 1 google points cubed would be small compared to the size of the actual cube) since a traveler would likely not notice a significant difference until he/she moved quite a few points away from their point of origin. Added to the complexity of this concept is the inclusion of time, creating the need for, not a cube, but an object with four dimensions to encapsulate all of it.

Sometimes a device takes a while to succeed because it is targeted towards the wrong consumer. An example is the Sony Walkman. At first it was not a success because it was marketed towards young buyers. However, it did become a success when it was discovered by older listeners who wanted to carry their music with them.

A question to ponder is: Does an AI require emotions to become safely sentient? In fiction, it seems often that making a sentient AI without emotions leads to disaster. In a related way, could it be that movies could become more like choose-your-own adventure books? You buy a movie and the movie you actually see will depend on the choices you make while watching it.

I think it's possible that in the future with the advance of computer tech. that you could make an entire movie using 3d models of actors and speech synth. technology so that real people don't have to do the work any longer. You could have Humprey Bogart starring opposite Nicole Kidman for example.

Ye gods, let's hope not, although I fear that that's how most people would adjudicate "sentience," unfortunately. That's all we need; a neurotic or paranoid computer. Mine is cranky enough without a midlife crisis, or what-have-you.

I dunno...seems bad enough that we are seeing hundreds of thousands of self-pubbed books that any sane person would term "works in progress" rather than finished products. How's that working out for all of us?
