If you're anything like the others I know, either OpenSolaris or NetBSD these days

Clearly you aren't reading enough.

As usual, one of my sons has come up with the correct strategy: buy the l6 gig non-3G iPad now. Start saving for the second generation, which is the one you really will want.

(And definitely not the case.)

I'm not actually completely convinced it's screen related rather than, say, postural, so I'd definitely be willing to give a non e-ink device a trial run, but only if the restocking fees are very low to none.

why only 16g? don't you think you'll go thru that fast? i have a 32g iphone that is always around 90%. for me i think i'll be grabbing the 64G non-3g. those movies and music files add up. with free wifi most anywhere and my 3g iphone to tether off of when i actually can't find any.

when the next gen comes out this one will get passed down to a family member just as my 1st gen iphone did. the nice thing about apple products is they have a longer service life than most pc gear.

Set up a NAS and use that for storage. Seems silly to pay the massive premium for flash memory when you can store a lot of stuff on a hard disk...

Really? Got a source for this?

(Not claiming you're wrong, it's just the precise opposite of my personal experience)

may macs generally last 4 years of use where my pc gear is replaced entirely every 2 (piecemeal). hand-me-down macs run pretty well. the pc's get retired to servers in the basement.

nas is ok for storage. but not when you're out of the house. i travel globally, that 64g will come in very handy (more so than at&t 3g).

Ah, miscomprehension on my part. I thought you were talking about how long it works, not how long it remains useable with modern software.

I've had bad luck with the Apple products I've owned. Both Ipods which went kaput in 2 and 3 years on light to moderate use.
