Move Over Lexi – Roger Puts Amazon Alexa in Your iPhone for Free

If you love the Amazon Echo and its virtual assistant Alexa and want to find a way to take it with you on the go, these new iPhone aps are for you.

Over the past week, two different iPhone apps have crossed my desk which add Alexa to the iPhone. One app, Lexi, costs $5 in iTunes, while the other app, Roger, is free (and is available for both Android and iOS).

Lexi supports a wide range of the Echo’s functionalities like remotely controlling your smart home devices and placing orders as well as the ability to install and turn skills off from the Alexa App. Unfortunately, it doesn't work with Alexa’s music or ebook services, so you'll still need to get an Echo or other official hardware if you want to stream your audiobooks or ebooks.

It sure would be nice if Amazon released a fully functional verion of Alexa for Android, Fire, and iOS. I'd love to have a bunch of baby Echos I could take places.

The review I read somewhere said six hours of music. It costs $50, but remember you would also have to buy and Echo for $180, unless you were OK with taking the one you have away with you.

Don’t buy one (I bought one)

The elevator pitch for the Triby is actually a kitchen pitch. 1. Take everything you like about the Amazon Echo speaker (including voice activation) and stick it into a portable Bluetooth speaker. 2. Add some physical buttons for shortcuts to your favorite radio stations or Spotify playlists. 3. Put an e-ink screen on it so you can receive messages from your family. 4. Stick it on the fridge.

Despite all the hassles I've just enumerated, I still can't help being a little smitten with the Triby. Even after a week and a half of using it, I still smile when I see that silly little flag pop out. I love grabbing it off my fridge and carrying it over to the next room when I'm listening to NPR or Spotify. I like the corny jokes you get from Alexa when you're showing it off. I like that I don't need to fiddle with my phone to get music playing on it.

ALL THE RIGHT IDEAS, NOT ENOUGH OF THEM DONE WELL

While I do wish the fit and finish of the hardware and software were better, I think the Triby is neat. Heck, I bought one — but I did so with my eyes wide open about its various problems.

If those hassles (or the $199 price point) have scared you off, don't worry. I'm sure that the Triby is going to be just the first of a flood of clever new gadgets that integrate with Amazon Alexa, and you’re going to want the one that gets all the little details right. And if the promised software update makes things way better (I’ll update this review if so), the Triby could be the one you want.

Yes, I read that review too. I decided to wait until 1) Triby gets it right, or 2) someone else does the same thing only better/cheaper. In the mean time I want an Android app!

Well, I wouldn't mind receiving YOUR stuff.

Most of the items I buy are mundane, but you may enjoy the dehydrated vegetables I ordered recently. Or how about some hard white wheat berries? I'm quite fond of this heavy-duty loaf pan, which makes great bread, but you'll have to buy your own.
