It seems that when they added "Advanced search" back for new OverDrive sites they also made it less tolerant of incorrect input. I have a fix for this and will release it tomorrow.

Fix search for recommendable books at legacy OverDrive sites, broken in version 1.37.0. Search for recommendable books is not currently available for new-style (2016) OverDrive sites.

The plugin currently won't run a search if any of the authors selected are part of a search already in progress, even if that in-progress search is at a library other than the one the new search is for. Could that restriction just be limited to searches for the same author at the same library?

Not easily. The logic of the software depends on the metadata of any books in use by one job not being changed by any other job once the first job has been launched. I have no plans to change this.

I added this plugin to Calibre but can't figure out how to use it. I have read the instructions on how to configure it, but what do I do to search for books in my library? I added a book to the catalog that I do not have in my personal library. Do I highlight the book in the list and click on the Overdrive link button? Which option do I choose? There is a greyed out option that says the selected book not linked. What does that mean and how do I fix it?

Sorry for the dense question, but I need a little help.

First you need to configure the plugin with information about a library. Click the Overdrive icon and choose "Customize plugin". To add a new library to the configuration start by clicking the green "+" at the upper right and then fill in the details on the new line created in the table. It's me again. I ran into a problem that I can't figure out the answer to. I added a book manually into Calibre and downloaded the metadata and cover. When I try to click on Overdrive link to find it in the library, I see a grayed out option that says selected book not linked. I searched the library's catalog and the book is available via overdrive. What am I not doing? How do I link a book?

For linking, you have to search it first at the library (Search for selected books).

You have to first do a search for the book at your lending library. This will create a link that you can use to access the book afterwards.

The search choices appear in the Overdrive menu above the "(Selected book not linked)" message. If it shows "(Customize this plugin to enable search)" there instead you need to enter the information for your lending library into the plugin configuration. That is required before a search can be performed.

I figured it would be easier to post my settings and what I am seeing. I am also uploading my log to see if there is something I am doing wrong.

The first shot is the book and the information I added manually. The second shot is while the book is selected and what I see in the menu. The third shot is my setup. I did check the library to make sure it is actually available.

The screenshot of your configuration shows an error in red. Searches are not allowed until all configuration errors are corrected. See the help section on configuring the plugin for more information.
