It has to be a Microsoft web browser, Edge or IE.

Well then,

I haven't used a Microsoft browser for years, generally when I do a new install of Windows, I go into "turn Windows features on or off" and turn off Internet
Explorer and use Firefox. I don't even have Edge, I'm using a version of Windows 10 which doesn't come with it.

I guess that wasn't a problem with earlier versions of Calibre or the plugins on Windows 7 because they always seemed to work using Firefox

So I turned on IE and went to the Goodreads and Fantastic Fiction websites and then tried the plugins and they worked.
I then turned IE back off just to see if the plugins would still work and they do, if they stop working in the future, I'll turn IE back on.

So thank you for the help, I really appreciate it

The point is that calibre and the plugin are using a certificate authority store that is part of the OS. The MS browsers use this and will update it when there are changes on the sites. The other browsers, Firefox, Chrome and anything else, use there own certificate authorities and maintain them in a separate location.

Okay, I understand at least as much as I can being pretty much ignorant of programming or the inner workings of how an OS or browser works.

At least I got the plugins to work, so I'm happy.

Again, thanks for the help and info, and the work you put in on on these.

DoctorOhh, this was and is incredibly kind of you and that json file is great.

I'm just wondering if you would be kind enough to post your latest version please? I'd be so grateful as it would help me greatly before I set about tagging everything.

You mentioned all those years ago that you were running a modified version of the json file created by Huisie. I'd love to get my hands on your modded version.

Many thanks whether or not you share your latest version. I'm just going through the thread now and may find it in there somewhere but 38 pages is going to take me a while.

5. Place the new goodreads.json file in the plugins directory.
6. Start calibre

Now you can go to Preferences - Metadata download - select goodreads - click Configure selected source to see what is currently mapped for goodreads metadata downloadable tags.

Update 2: I am now running a modified version of the json file created by Huisie. This json file can be found here. It starts with about 800 goodreads tags mapped. The Goodreads json file attached to this post has about 250 Goodreads tags mapped. Either is a good starting point.

I haven't seen a setting for this in the UI, but wondering if there is a way to do it.

The plugin seems to import author names with initials with a space after them.

The plugin is not doing that. It is done by common calibre code when merging or updating the metadata. It handles all initials with dots after them in this way. There is no way to configure the behaviour.

As of today (August 1) I get 401 for any account management request. So it seems like they finally killed the good portion of the APIs.

The metadata source plugin does not use the API. It is the Goodreads Sync plugin that does. But, at the least, updating my reading progress just worked, so some of the API is still there.

I've used it yesterday (Goodreads Sync) and everything has worked for me: download data, upload books and upload reading progress. So, I guess there is another problem.

I just tried a few books with no issues. As @DoctorOhh suggested, can you post some examples? The links to the page for the books is best. Or post the log from the metadata download.
