Hi carld,
Lovely looking covers - but please remember that this is an international board and far from all members have the bandwidth to enjoy them - it might even be a nuisance to them. We'd also all (I'm sure) like to hear why you read these books - why select these to post about? Write us a note ![]() |

@ carld. Hi, They look nice. Why don't you tell us something about those books. if you liked it and why. What is the preliminary impression? ...
![]() Ooops, Ea has just said the same things. Much more graciously than me and that's no surprise. Sorry Ea. Last edited by beppe; 07-22-2010 at 06:35 PM. |

If you're going to take the time to post covers you might as well post links to the books on Amazon instead. Much more useful, less bandwith required and prevents us from judging a book by its cover. Even if I don't buy from Amazon, I always start there for the synopsis and reader reviews.

Just finished The Angel's Game. I liked it better than Shadow of the Wind I think (although it has been a while), same feel and style but somehow the mystery was a bit more compelling possibly because it was so familiar after reading Shadow of the Wind - the ending was a bit odd though. While tempted to leap into a reread of Shadow of the Wind while it is all fresh I have picked up Beatrice and Virgil (Yann Martel) instead. Another second novel and while it may be a bit too soon to tell I think I like it better than the first as well. I admit the first bit left a slightly cynical taste in my mouth as far as the self-portrait went but once I got past that it took some really interesting turns. It's a short book and I'm about half way through.

Just finished The Foreign Correspondent by Alan Furst. Very good read and it was a freebie. But now I'm going to have to buy all his other books. Damn, these free books are expensive!

I just finished "The Mummy Case" by Elizabeth Peters, and now have started "The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to our Brains" by Nicholas Carr (both from the library). I'm also reading "One Shot" by Lee Child on my iPhone (free from Borders) and started a little bit of "Idiot America" by Charles Pierce on my Sony.

If it's too good to be true, it probably is!
BUYER BEWARE!
Just finished reading this edition of Bartlett's Familiar Quotations which Amazon FALSELY CLAIMS on that page is the 17th (the latest) edition. It is not. It is a much earlier, probably public-domain version and does not include quotes from more modern public figures such as Ronald Reagan or JKF, both of which are included in the 17th edition. I left a scathing review under the heading, "FALSE ADVERTISING." I should have known better. The latest edition for $3.96? Shame on me! See the heading of this post! (Click to enlarge) |

Tom - that sucks! Ask for a refund. Amazon are - apparently - quite good at issuing them where there's good cause.
Finished Parable of the Forgotten. It's one of those books that stays with you for a while after reading. That's not an incredibly good thing at times - I don't need extra inspiration for swearing! ![]() The narrator is Jarvis, a user of an impressive number of different drugs. He's just got off alcohol after a suicide attempt and psych ward visit after his brother's death. He wants to know who killed his brother. Then he finds his friend Lady - a transvestite sex worker - in the Botanic Gardens, dead. So now he's looking to solve two murders, getting advice from a number of voices in his head (including his dead brother's). Except he starts seeing a bigger picture, where it looks like the same person might have killed both of them, for the same reason... and then framed Jarvis. Gets 5 stars from me. And a shudder or two. |
