Just finished A Walk in the Woods by Bryson. Have to admit, I was disappointed. The tone of the book is so negative. Wry sarcasm is one thing, but after reading that book, I can't imagine anyone wanting to go out into the woods. Not likely to try him again anytime soon. This was a library grab, so I'm not out anything.

Gonna jump into American Gods next, a book I tried to read when it came out, then gave up on. Will see if having a discussion group or more maturity as a reader helps me get into it this time.

About a third of a way through The Angel's Game. Follow up book to Shadow of the Wind. I had no idea that there would be correlations between the two of them and it was a pleasant surprise. I am now going to have to go back and "leaf" through Shadow of the Wind.

I've walked some of the places Bryson mentions, and his opinions of them and mine vary quite a bit. He seemed to only see the negative, not the positive, about preservation in the United States and that bothered me.

He also is dismissive of the day hiker, in my opinion, and when he states outright that some people don't belong in the woods, it just really turned me off. Some of us can't just abandon ourselves to the woods in anticipation of a book advance.

Just smacked me of being elitist all around, which was a big turn off.

Like nomesque, I liked that book, but I'm a Bryson fan. However, saying that, it is not close to my favourite, and my partner was not fond of it at all, actually giving up on it before the end. I would say that, to my mind, it's not his best. I personally like his Notes From A Small Island probably the most, and a natural (given my location) second nod to Down Under/In A Sunburned Country. They're the better "travel" books of his, I reckon.

A Short History of Nearly Everything is also a good (if "short", considering its subject matter ) read, though not "travel".

Normally I wouldn't suggest another book by the same author if a person has not enjoyed one...but it might be worth giving another a go in this case, if the chance crops up, Trebro. My recommendation would be Notes From A Small Island.

Cheers,
Marc

I finally jumped on the bandwagon and got the Millenium trilogy by Larssen.
I started to read the first one on the plane, finished it yesterday and loved it, just getting into the second one ("the girl who played with fire" I hope). Now I know what all the fuss was about! Shutter Island has been pushed further down the TBR list.

Really happy that you liked it, SneakySnake. Just goes to show how personal and subjective novel assessment can be. I struggled through the first 120 pages of *Dragon Tattoo* and it bored the tears out of me to the extent that I deleted the entire trilogy. Vive la differance! Cheers. Neil

CassidyM, I'm going to look out for those two Bill Bryson books - I love coming late to an author and being able to plough steadily through the books they have already written.

I just picked up Liz Jensen's Dirty Little Book of Stolen Crime. People keep recommending her books to me and I haven't read any of them.

I'm also reading The Book by M Clifford after seeing it recommended in various forums.

Thanks, Libby Cone and Bear Mountain Books for mentioning Alison Wonderland.

I'm reading THE LAST CHILD by John Hart for an online group discussion. The writing is terrific, as always. Next up, I plan to read IN THE WIND by Barbara Fister.

I just finished Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson (he's one of my fav authors) and now reading The Passage by Justin Cronin.

To jump on the Bryson conversation, I've read most all of his works and if you can click into his sarcastic humor, he's a good read.
