Paradise City is the 23rd (according to the blurb - I didn't count myself) in the really nice IMO Joe Gunther police procedural series by Archer Mayor. It has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0085UD7DO
Kindle US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B0085UD7DO
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/paradise-city

Spoiler:
Quote:
Now a New York Times bestselling series, "Even in beautiful Vermont, Archer Mayor finds shadows . . . and his detective, Joe Gunther, finds a way to beat them back." —NPR

Joe Gunther and his team at the Vermont Bureau of Investigation are alerted to a string of unrelated burglaries across Vermont. Someone, in addition to flatscreens, computers, and stereos, has also been stealing antiques and jewelry.

Meanwhile, in Boston, an elderly woman surprises some thieves in her Beacon Hill home and is viciously murdered. The Boston police find that not only is the loot similar to what's being stolen in Vermont, but it may have the same destination. Word is out that someone powerful is purchasing these particular kinds of items in the "Paradise City" of Northampton, Mass.

Gunther, the Boston Police, and the vengeful granddaughter of the murdered old lady convene on Northampton, eager to get to the bottom of the mystery and find the "responsible parties"—although each is motivated to mete out some very different penalties.

All of Tyler Dilts books are $0.99 each right now (4 Long Beach Homicide and the stand alone novel).

I read the first two and really enjoyed them. I liked the characters and smiled at the way the partner Jennifer Tanaka is shown to be a better cop in almost every way than Danny is.

Recommended them to my MIL who has already read all of them.

Of course, we're also from Long Beach, so the books had a bit of a bonus to us. But they are worth reading, regardless

Cozy mystery - knitting

Be aware that this book is NOT written by Agatha Christie but based on her Hercule Poirot series. Let me know if I should continue these types of postings as I generally don't read books based on the series of a dead author (couple exceptions like Dune).

FWIW, Sophie Hannah's Poirot books are authorized by the Christie estate. There's a nice interview with her about it here, only a couple of years old: https://www.vulture.com/2019/10/soph...ie-poirot.html

Again FWIW, I've read the first two (including Closed Casket) of Hannah's four continuation books and liked them. The other two have not yet made it to the top of my TBR list, but mostly just because I'm reading a lot more review copies these days, not because I didn't like the two I read.

$3.99 is a bit more expensive than I usually post for fiction/mysteries, but this is a most-recent title (2021) in a really great series, so: Blood Grove is the 14th or 15th (depending on whether you count a collection of short stories) in Walter Mosley's Easy Rawlins series. It's on sale as part of Kindle US's "Top fiction eBooks for $3.99 or less", so the price should be good through 12 Sept 2021. But I'd still buy it soon if you want it. It's price-matched at Kobo US too, at least as of right now.

Kindle US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B08BL9CHL4/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/blood-grove-1

ADD: Also on sale for £2.99 at Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B088NMLF9H

Spoiler:
Quote:
"Master of craft and narrative" Walter Mosley returns with this crowning achievement in the Easy Rawlins saga, in which the iconic detective's loyalties are tested on the sun-soaked streets of Southern California (National Book Foundation)

It is 1969, and flames can be seen on the horizon, protest wafts like smoke though the thick air, and Easy Rawlins, the Black private detective whose small agency finally has its own office, gets a visit from a white Vietnam veteran. The young man comes to Easy with a story that makes little sense. He and his lover, a beautiful young woman, were attacked in a citrus grove at the city’s outskirts. He may have killed a man, and the woman and his dog are now missing. Inclined to turn down what sounds like nothing but trouble, Easy takes the case when he realizes how damaged the young vet is from his war experiences—the bond between veterans superseding all other considerations.

The veteran is not Easy’s only unlooked-for trouble. Easy’s adopted daughter Feather’s white uncle shows up uninvited, raising questions and unsettling the life Easy has long forged for the now young woman. Where Feather sees a family reunion, Easy suspects something else, something that will break his heart.

Blood Grove is a crackling, moody, and thrilling race through a California of hippies and tycoons, radicals and sociopaths, cops and grifters, both men and women. Easy will need the help of his friends—from the genius Jackson Blue to the dangerous Mouse Alexander, Fearless Jones, and Christmas Black—to make sense of a case that reveals the darkest impulses humans harbor.

Blood Grove is a novel of vast scope and intimate insight, and a soulful call for justice by any means necessary.

I've been keeping an eye out for Ovidia Yu's latest Su Lin/Crown Colony mystery, The Cannonball Tree Mystery, to go on sale. And now it has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. I know what I'm going to be reading tonight! The last couple of titles in this series were nominated/finalists for various historical mystery awards.

Has Su Lin summoned a tree demon who is now killing on her behalf?

The overpoweringly fragrant flowers, snakelike vines and deadly fruit of the cannonball tree are enough to keep most people away. But when a piece of expensive photographic equipment is found nearby, on closer inspection Su Lin discovers the body of Mimi, her horrible relative who has been trying to blackmail her.

Su Lin is not the only one to realise how much easier this death makes things for her in the new normal of life in Syonan (Japanese Occupied Singapore). And then more fortuitious deaths follow. But is someone really killing people on her account?

As Su Lin contends with the fear and rancour of those around her, the resentment of former friends and a whistling demon, can she hope not only to survive but untangle the cannonball tree's secrets to prevent further deaths... and possibly turn the tide of the war?

P.C. Wells has been refused a permanent position with the Fortrow C.I.D team…

It is a blow to his career that he was unprepared for. Working all his life to ensure others are safe, he is disheartened to think it isn’t enough.

He prides himself on his work ethics and values.

Until one night when he stops a Rolls Royce which jumped a red light.

What was intended as a caution became an argumentative dispute with the local bigwig, William Bateman, in front of his evening companions.

Retaliation came in the form of a complaint against Wells. A claim that Wells was trying to extract a bribe from Bateman.

Already saddened at the loss of a position in C.I.D. Wells is furious at this allegation. But without proof he is left with no choice but to accept the investigation against him.

Unless he can clear his name by other means.

Investigating the others in the vehicle, Wells is soon under pressure to desist in his inquiries.

Pressure in the form of two thugs in the night.

But why put in the effort to ruin a career over being caught jumping a light?

Or is something more sinister happening that Bateman is trying to divert attention from?

Wells is determined to uncover the truth. Even if it means breaking the rules he has lived his life by.

With his career stalled, he sees no point in treading carefully. A man who has nothing left to lose is willing to do anything…

Berlin Game is the first in the Bernard Samson series by Len Deighton. A Penguin Modern Classics (!) version of Berlin Game is on sale for £0.99 at Kindle UK today, as part of today's Daily Deal. Per SYKM, this was a finalist for the 1983 Gold Dagger Award.

'Masterly ... dazzlingly intelligent and subtle' Sunday Times

'Deighton's best novel to date - sharp, witty and sour, like Raymond Chandler adapted to British gloom and the multiple betrayals of the spy' Observer

Embattled agent Bernard Samson is used to being passed over for promotion as his younger, more ambitious colleagues - including his own wife Fiona - rise up the ranks of MI6. When a valued agent in East Berlin warns the British of a mole at the heart of the Service, Samson must return to the field and the city he loves to uncover the traitor's identity. This is the first novel in Len Deighton's acclaimed, Game, Set and Match trilogy.

Why would you ask someone to do this? She’s already given you a heads up about a sale title; you check your preferred sellers. Do you think sufue is here for your convenience? Why should she have to make the extra effort and not you? She’s supposed to check more sites for every deal she posts, just because the occasional one might appeal to you? So a lot more work for her to save a little effort for you?

What next? Requiring that people who list deals also provide links to Kobo in various countries, Google Books, Apple…?

It’s this kind of unreasonable request that could lead someone to think it’s not worth the bother. I’m grateful when someone provides a title; any more is gravy. Sheesh.

The Providence Rider is the fourth in Robert McCammon's Matthew Corbett, which has some serious enthusiasm upthread. It has dropped to £2.99 at Kindle UK right now. Titles in this series (other than the first one) seem to be normally in the £10-ish range, so this is a pretty good deal.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B099MPWNTZ
Kindle US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B099MPWNTZ

Spoiler:
Quote:
“A colorful, action-packed tale filled with sinister doings and plenty of good old-fashioned heroics . . . An entertaining ride” set in colonial times (Criminal Element).

In the winter of 1703, Matthew Corbett’s Manhattan neighborhood is shaken by explosions—and Matthew discovers his old nemesis, Professor Fell, will do anything he can to capture Matthew’s attention and obtain his services as a professional problem solver. As a result, Matthew travels from New York to Pendulum Island in the distant Bermudas, taking on various opponents in his quest to come face-to-face with the murderous and manipulative criminal mastermind . . .

Filled with twists, turns, and an almost tangible sense of place, and featuring “a gang of villains that would make even Batman run for cover,” The Providence Rider is historical thriller writing at its finest, from a New York Times–bestselling, multiple award–winning author (Criminal Element).

“A colorful and well-researched depiction of colonial America, enlivened by a rogues’ gallery of well-drawn characters . . . A rollicking good yarn.” —Publishers Weekly

“This popular series takes us to a long forgotten time with characters who never fail to entertain.” —The Florida Times-Union

Oh yeah, and Cardinal Black, from a week or so ago is still on sale for $2.99 in the US: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh....php?p=4150936
