The Vent and Rant Thread

I bought a white-noise generator (via amazon) which I use when I'm not using a fan in the window.

I'm really lucky, I have a four story townhouse and the house adjacent to mine are vacant. I'm not sure how loud it'll be, but I do sleep at the top level and the other houses don't have that level, so I think I'm pretty safe. I also sleep with the TV on so that drowns out pretty much everything else (including some nearby dogs and someone who likes to bang with a hammer).

But with the new kitten, on her first night I only got four hours of sleep, since she kept waking up and spazzing out. So the next two nights I slept in the guest bedroom, but now I've moved her down there. Less company for her down there, but she seems to be doing well and I do play with her in there. In the next few days I'm going to install some gates so she can run around a little more but also I can keep her out when I need my bedtime. Then hopefully she'll calm down after a while...

So I have just arrived in Leeds a few days ago (seems to be a very nice city). I go to the University to check out the atmosphere. The day before, I sent an email to my supervisor at the university, but no response yet. So I go to the student service and says that Prof. XXX is my supervisor, and I'll just take a look around the facility. The desk clerk starts to pale, asks me to wait, and storms out of the room.

I'm thinking "what on earth is going on?"

Turns out that the professor from whom I have a letter of invitation has taken up a position in London instead.

So basically he left without notifying me. And now I'm stuck in Leeds without a supervisor for my Ph.D. project. Great.

And since I was invited as a visiting scholar (not as a research student), no registration of me has been done. I'm a Ph.D.-fellow and I am not a Ph.D.-fellow at the same time it seems. I suppose I should see the irony in it. Afterall my project is about a certain kind of art which is inbetween categories, or rather is opposite things at the same time. But somehow I'm not laughing.


The upside is that it's my university in Denmark who is paying the rent for the apartment here in Leeds.

The downside is that I don't want to spend time away from my wife and kid if all I have to do is sit and write. I can do that at home just as easily.

Given the section in bold above, I am hoping that your Ph.D. is in quantum physics

i do hope you get it resolved quickly laz, it seems a bit irresponsible of that professor to go off and leave you like that !

my personal rant for today :

ARG !!! SOME ACCURSED NEIGHBOR IS MAKING FRIED FISH !!!!

the unbearably revolting stench has infiltrated my entire appartement !!!! somebody, please, get me a gas mask !!!!

eeewwwww! Gag. I can almost smell the fishy-ness all the way over here. And the smell just lingers and lingers.

The least they could do is invite you over for dinner! Then at least you'd have fried fish breath as well as the scent of it.
