Yes, it's important to mention, but I don't know much about this book, other than praise I read over the years. From reviews, the SF/F elements are slight. It does involve comics and superheroes.

The times I have 'visited' Kobo's beautiful UK location I didn't even need a UK address. I left my US location (unless the UK secretly has a Woodlands, Texas too) and everything was fine.

The only thing I did was remove all payment information. Then when I checked out, PayPal was an option.

The Body Scout by Lincoln Michel is $2.99 on Amazon.com
Quote:
In the future you can have any body you want—as long as you can afford it.

But in a New York ravaged by climate change and repeat pandemics, Kobo is barely scraping by. He scouts the latest in gene-edited talent for Big Pharma-owned baseball teams, but his own cybernetics are a decade out of date and twin sister loan sharks are banging down his door. Things couldn't get much worse.

Then his brother—Monsanto Mets slugger J.J. Zunz—is murdered at home plate.

Determined to find the killer, Kobo plunges into a world of genetically modified CEOs, philosophical Neanderthals, and back-alley body modification, only to quickly find he's in a game far bigger and more corrupt than he imagined. To keep himself together while the world is falling apart, he'll have to navigate a time where both body and soul are sold to the highest bidder.

Some reviewers are stating that this classic series has been edited, or sanitized, for today's readers. I'm not talking about the confusing physical editions available for purchase, but the actual text.

Do you know anything about this?

Do you mean the Dune books? If your source is Amazon reviews, this reddit comment is claiming they're all wrong. This is the first time I'm learning of any edited versions. If it happened, I image I would have been exposed to some "censorship discourse" about it.

Unconquerable Sun by Kate Elliott is $2.99 on Amazon.

Author describes it as "gender-bent Alexander the Great in space."

https://www.amazon.com/Unconquerable.../dp/B07WPNFXN6

Quote:
Princess Sun has finally come of age.

Growing up in the shadow of her mother, Eirene, has been no easy task. The legendary queen-marshal did what everyone thought impossible: expel the invaders and build Chaonia into a magnificent republic, one to be respected—and feared.

But the cutthroat ambassador corps and conniving noble houses have never ceased to scheme—and they have plans that need Sun to be removed as heir, or better yet, dead.

To survive, the princess must rely on her wits and companions: her biggest rival, her secret lover, and a dangerous prisoner of war.

Take the brilliance and cunning courage of Princess Leia—add in a dazzling futuristic setting where pop culture and propaganda are one and the same—and hold on tight:

This is the space opera you’ve been waiting for.

Yeah, I haven't heard a peep about the Dune books being bowdlerized. And the first book at least is one of the great classics of sci-fi. I'm pretty sure there would be an ENORMOUS uproar if that were the case.

The World Gives Way by Marissa Levien is $2.99 on Amazon.com
This is in Amal El-Mohtar's list of best SF/F novels of 2021 for the New York Times. Review. [Warning: Paywalls]
Review blurb:
Quote:
A staggering, action-packed marvel set on a doomed generation ship the size of Switzerland. There’s a crack in the hull, widening, irreparable and kept secret; Myrra Dal, an indentured nanny, finds this out when her employers kill themselves, and does the only thing that makes sense to her: She takes the baby and runs.
Book description:
Quote:
In a near-future world on the brink of collapse, a young woman born into servitude must seize her own freedom

In fifty years, Myrra will be free.

Until then, she's a contract worker. Ever since she was five, her life and labor have belonged to the highest bidder on her contract—butchers, laundries, and now the powerful, secretive Carlyles.

But when one night finds the Carlyles dead, Myrra is suddenly free a lot sooner than she anticipated—and at a cost she never could have imagined. Burdened with the Carlyles' orphaned daughter and the terrible secret they died to escape, she runs. With time running out, Myrra must come face to face with the truth about her world—and embrace what's left before it's too late.

A portrait of a world in freefall, and the fierce drive to live even at the end of it all.

Three books for $2. I can't imagine it will ever be cheaper.

I read this (The World Gives Way by Marissa Levien) - your mileage may vary depending on whether you like the personal or physical side of world-building. Elements of the latter were deeply frustrating and implausible to me, might not bug others who are there for the characters and the story.

There was also a Chekhov's gun that to me never fired at all, and some other pieces of the ending that didn't work for me.

Sounds more like a Chekhov's red herring.

Terminal Boredom: Stories by Izumi Suzuki is $1.99 on Amazon.com
This is a collection of Japenese short stories from 40 years ago.
A short description of each story can be found here: https://jamesdavisnicoll.com/review/...s-such-a-chore

Quote:
The first English language publication of the work of Izumi Suzuki, a legend of Japanese science fiction and a countercultural icon

At turns nonchalantly hip and charmingly deranged, Suzuki's singular slant on speculative fiction would be echoed in countless later works, from Margaret Atwood and Harumi Murakami, to Black Mirror and Ex Machina. In these darkly playful and punky stories, the fantastical elements are always earthed by the universal pettiness of strife between the sexes, and the gritty reality of life on the lower rungs, whatever planet that ladder might be on.
