They likely would, however, I am going to try the Einstein method of dressing on this trip. Four plain black t-shirts and four pairs of plain jeans. My black crocs will complete the ensemble.

I plan to be comfortable and pretty much invisible the whole trip.

OK .... nursing a sore butt and going to bed. I went to the doctor today to see about my back. He have me some prescriptions, but also gave me an injection (they were going to give it to me in my arm, but they said it would really hurt .... so I had them give it to me in my rear end .... more muscle, so less pain overall).

However, the whole experience has left me fried ... so I'm taking my Kindle, some dinner and a cold soda pop and that's it for me tonight.

Resting after hacking away at cross-site CSS all day. (They want the college site to look just like the university site... bad design though it is.)

Anyone have any advice about a liquid layout that has fixed width on both of the side columns and allows the center to take up whatever space is left? Needs to work on FF2, FF3, IE6, and IE7.

you could try making an outer container div, width 100%. inside that make 1 div floated left (left column), width XXXpx, and same thing floated right. this is off the top of my head and it's been a while since i did a page like that, so i can't remember if there are any particular bugs to look out for. i'd try harder, but it's already past my bedtime.

i will give you these really useful ressources before i go take my shower and crawl into bed though :
http://www.glish.com/css/
http://www.positioniseverything.net/
http://www.pixy.cz/blogg/clanky/css-3col-layout/

that last one might be just the ticket for you.

Yes, that last one looks good. I think I need to move my center column below the right column in the html (well, actually in the php that generates the html).

Thanks!

(Even though I still think this is a bad design. All the heat maps I've seen show people looking to the left for navigation, not to the right.)

well, i agree that we've developped the habit of looking to the left (or top...) for navigation, but that's partly because a couple of guys at the beginning of teh interwebs put their nav there (in *shudder* tables) and now it's become a convention. i can't remember where (sorry) but i actually read a compelling article (a long time ago) about why navigation on the right is actually significantly more ergonomic (for instance, the fact that the majority of web users have their mouse on the right of the keyboard, and the scroll bars are also on the right side of the window, so it often means less mousework to get to the top right than the top left... i know, these examples break down some when you factor in such hyper recent breakthroughs as *gasp* meeces with scrollwheels, but there was more to it.)

actually if i remember right that article said that from an ergonomic standpoint THE ENTIRE INTERNET AS WE KNOW IT is wrong !! (i mean, poorly designed). it was an interesting read. if i manage to find it again amongst my eleventy bazillion bookmarks (i read it long before tags, alas) i'll give you the link.

on the other hand, in occidental languages anyway, the reading pattern is left to right, so left is the beginning point, and that's in favor of a left nav.

i personally have seen some sites with right nav and a few of them have struck me as interestingly innovative and perfectly functional ; but that does also indicate that i noticed it, whereas left nav has become practically instinctive. also the danger with right nav (and i can say this because it has personally happened to me more than once) is that if your content is too large, and one of your visitors (like me, for instance) prefers not to browse in a fullscreen window, the navigation can easily get cut off by the right edge of the window in which case you look all over the damn place for it and get really really annoyed, and by the time you find it (IF you find it) you've usually decided NEVER TO SET FOOT IN THAT STUPID SITE AGAIN. (flounce !)

however a right column can usefully serve as a place to put little info flashes, links, etc. much like on the mr front page.

anyway good luck with your columns ! let me know how you manage.

I'd use some WD-40 and duct tape, but that's probably just me.

Not just you.

If it doesnn't move, and should: WD-40

If it does move, and shouldn't: Duct Tape

For all else, use a bigger hammer.

I can't imagine browsing in a full screen window, but that may be because I have a 19" monitor in 1600x1200 resolution.

An old friend is a photography fan, and spends time on places like Flickr examining other people's work. He normally uses Firefox, but broke out K-Meleon for the photo stuff because it has a good full screen mode with no status bar, title bar etc, which is a good fit for his wide but short monitor.

I asked him if he'd actually tried kiosk mode in FF, which should do what we wants, and he agreed to DL FF3 and try it. Mind you, I believe FF2 behaved the same way, so I think he missed my point.

Interesting. I tend to solve my problems with pliers and wirecutters, and occasionally solder.

The right-edge cutoff is one of several reasons I'm not a fan of right-edge menubars. Occidental left-to-right reading is another. But regardless of whether the left menubar is ergonomically sensible or not, I'm going to put more faith in the empirical evidence of heat maps on this one. (Proving that I'm more of a pragmatist than an idealist at this stage of my life, I suppose.)

NOT that my opinion matters.
