It's hard to rid ourselves of some of the terminology and other things that we learned in the dead-tree book days growing up . . . .

It took me a second to see the joke. I think that here in the 'States we still say "dial"--I think that I do, in fact. But I had not realized it until now. ha.

I won't post anymore on that line of thought, lest the moderator say something about being off topic.

I think we're allowed 30 off topic words a day before we're given lashes. I'm saving the rest of mine for

A Rare Markdown on a Rick Steves Guidebook--This One is Rick Steves Paris 2015.

I am really stoked about this book.

Many of us, in the United States at least, have watched Rick Steves' programs on PBS. Because of his many years of taking trips to Europe (primarily), he has a wealth of knowledge about Europe, and what to see and how to get around there.

I do not remember seeing a Rick Steves guidebook marked down in the whole 7 or 8 years that I've hunted for free and very low priced ebooks. And this one is marked down a huge 93% from the digital list price, to only $1 right now. Wow!

Rick Steves Paris 2015. By Rick Steves, et al. Rated 4.6 stars, from 95 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $21.99; digital list price $14.99; Kindle price now $1.00. Avalon Travel Publishing, publisher. 780 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Rick-Steves-Pa...VV871CR3T3H0HG.

Book Description
You can count on Rick Steves to tell you what you really need to know when traveling in the City of Light—Paris.

With the self-guided tours in this book, you’ll explore the grand Champs-Elysées, the eye-popping Eiffel Tower, and the radiant cathedral of Notre-Dame. Learn how to save money and avoid the lines at the Louvre and Orsay Museums. Enjoy the ambience of Parisian neighborhoods, and take a day trip to the glittering palace of Versailles, or to the Champagne-soaked city of Reims. Then grab a café crème at a sidewalk café and listen to the hum of the city. You’ll see why Paris remains at the heart of global culture.

Rick’s candid, humorous advice will guide you to good-value hotels and restaurants in delightful neighborhoods. You’ll learn how to navigate the Paris Métro, and which sights are worth your time and money. More than just reviews and directions, a Rick Steves guidebook is a tour guide in your pocket.

Rick Steves Florence & Tuscany 2015. $1.00.

Barcelona. $1.00.

And, while searching for the above, I ran across these. They're not of the same (high) caliber as Rick Steves' guidebooks, I'm sure, but they're free:
Top 14 Places to Visit in Poland - Top 14 Poland Travel Guide (Europe Travel Series Book 31). $0.00.

Top 20 Things to See and Do in Edinburgh - Top 20 Edinburgh Travel Guide (Europe Travel Series Book 38). $0.00.

($7 (the price that you suggested Rick Steves Rome might be) is way above my threshold for books to be bargains. Unless, perhaps, it was for a set of the Loeb Classical Library, or something like that. ha.)

Keep up the great posts, mostekm!

Tracking Marco Polo by Tim Severin
Quote:
Marco Polo was one of the greatest explorers of all time.

After the best-selling The Brendan Voyage and The Sinbad Voyage, Tim Severin took up the challenge of following in his footsteps.

Using the great explorer’s journals as a route guide, Severin followed him all the way from Venice to Afghanistan — on a motorbike.

This is his witty and enthralling account of a latter-day caravan through Armenia and Persia, across deserts and mountains, as Severin and his companions overcome crashes, floods, sandstorms and linguistic muddles with zest and ingenuity.

Ancient and modern jostle for attention in the bustling towns and panoramic landscapes of Turkey and Afghanistan. Seeking out thirteenth-century Asia, they pass through the Valley of the Assassins to find the village of the Magi. And even with his foot in plaster, Severin takes a camel ride high into the Deh Bakri Pass in search of the famed ‘apples of paradise’.

The excitement, the discomfort, and the sheer magic of this epic journey are brought vividly to life by one of Britain’s finest travel writers.

Travel alongside Tim Severin as he goes ‘Tracking Marco Polo’.

Singapore Burning: Heroism and Surrender in World War II by Colin Smith
Quote:
In 1927, its sixtieth anniversary as a Crown colony, Singapore was thriving.

The Jazz age roared on, rubber prices soared, people worked as hard as was considered healthy in tropical climes and many, perhaps, played rather harder than they should have done.

But then, not twenty years later, in 1942 ‘The worst disaster and largest capitulation in British history,’ according to Winston Churchill, took place on the island.

Churchill's description of the fall of Singapore in 1942, which led to over 100,000 British, Australian and Indian troops being captured by the Japanese, was no wartime exaggeration.

With new material from British, Australian, Indian and Japanese sources, Colin Smith has woven together the full and terrifying story of Singapore's fall and its aftermath.

Alongside cowardice and incompetence he uncovers acts of true heroism, alongside treachery heart-rending loyalty.

And he finds compassion as well as brutality from the bravest and most capricious enemy Britain has ever faced.
