What does that mean? I'm glad I am not an English major or expect perfectly preened prose so I can just read a book and enjoy the story. Yes, I have read books where the language got in the way of the story... but I can't recall it happening a lot.

Well... to each his (or her) own.

I pick this book up in March and still am only a few chapters in, its so boring. I thought it was just me that didn't really get it since it's such a hit on most best sellers list.

I don't think age has anything to do with it. (I'm 31)

Just finished Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan. Really enjoyed it and am reading the second in the series featuring the Villian hero Takeshi Kovacs. Thanks for the great recommendation MR members!

Wouldn't it be nice if clicking that button put you on an email notification list for when the book finally becomes available?

Anyway, I will probably purchase her other two books as well. I've read the sequel many years back (remember it not being as good as the original novel), but never the prequel.
I read that about 12 or 13 yrs ago. Very beautifully written and haunting. But I don't think I could read it again, too much angst. Which was probably why I liked it as a teenager

Sorry, I wasn't referring to language, but to the narrative style. It annoys me (too much, probably) when authors spend so much time spelling out things that are already obvious. And I don't like it when everything is too obvious, when everything is said and explained, when there is no ambiguity, in short when there is no space for my imagination to fill. That's what I meant by "not very well written".

I agree, it's rather boring, and in the case of the French edition it's badly translated too

Glad to know it isn't just me! I found it boring and downloaded "61 Hours" a few days later. "61 Hours" moves at a much quicker pace.

Harry001 said ***is it just me or does the first third of the book is extremly lame?***

Because of the hype and 'some' positive reviews here, Harry, I gave *The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo* 130 pages before I was so bored to tears, I tossed it aside. That's very rare for me.

Quite honestly, had this come to my little publishing house as a manuscript submission, I'd have rejected after a chapter. Maybe, though, that's why we're still a 'little' publishing house. I guess there must be something in this trilogy judging from rave reviews elsewhere.

Horses for courses -- just not one that grabs me by the short and curlies. And if an author hasn't done that within 130 pages, I reckon he's not doing his job.

Hoots. Neil

Just finished Einstein's Cosmos by Michael Kaku and what an excellent read! Kaku does a masterful job blending Einstein's science with his life story. This book gives you an superb insight into both Einstein the Scientist and Einstein the man. And, thanks to Kaku's ability to describe very complex principles of physics in understandable terms I now have a much better understanding of Einstein's work.

Next Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson

Finished The City & The City by Mieville. I thought it was pretty good (and it's not normally my genre).

Just began The Last Stand by Nathaniel Philbrick. An historical account of the events and circumstances of the Battle of the Little Big Horn. (Excellent thus far and I've read several other books on this subject.)

Well perhaps for you it is more about "selling good books" than "good selling books"?
