I think that they may be more concerned that the English crowd do not bring old instruments like crumhorns to the field.

I think most soccer fans would pass out if they continiously tried to play the crumhorn. It requires a LOT of air.

Anyways, I think it's funny that the FIFA highlights do show the free kick on the crossbar, but doesn't show the goal that should have been.

Seems like North Korea isn't the only one manipulating its reporting.

Sorry, Moejoe. I'm just glad there were some more goals by Germany, there might have been wars if it had stayed 2-1 .

Simply, England would not have been pushing so hard and leaving themselves so open at the back if it were 2:2 and not 2:1.
I'm really wondering what's wrong with all the referees and linesmen in this World Cup. The referee of Argentinia - Mexico was blind as well.

Now we know why FIFA refuses to use technology in football.

Well, I see it as keeping the randomness that keeps football so interesting and unexpected. It is very open to unknown factors: the weather, the sun in your eyes, the wind affecting the ball's trajectory, the referee making mistakes. Sometimes I'm a romantic

A few years ago I would have agreed - then technology was introduced to international cricket (it's a bit like baseball, but more exciting and the best games last for 5 days). There were all sorts of concerns about the authority of the umpire being undermined, that it would disrupt the game, that it would, in some way, take the "sport" out of it. In fact just the opposite has happened: umpires are the ones who decide whether to call on the technology to help them with a decision on any particular occasion, it takes about 15 seconds for the technology to give a result, and waiting for the result just adds to the excitement of the game, (and believe me, in a game that lasts 5 days anything that adds excitement is to be welcomed).

Apart from the ridiculous situation in the England v Germany game, it would stop a lot of the falling over in the penalty box because if you convince the ref to give you a penalty it's almost a guaranteed goal and other forms of gamesmanship - which is just a polite word for cheating.

I love those things. But I like that the referee makes mistakes that I can understand. I mean, OK, I have no problem if the referee blows the whistle to signal an offside which doesn't exist, but the striker is in the same line as the defender. But pornographic mistakes like the ones of yesterday detract from the game, IMO.

By the way, boring match between Netherlands and Slovakia. The Dutch will need to offer much more if they want to go through the half finals, whichever team they have to beat. Slovakia's strikers couldn't score today even if the goal was the rainbow (Vittek missed two good chances), but Brazil or Chile won't be as forgiving.

Well you're right, but I think that the disallowed goal must have affected the game in some way. Having said that, and after a day's mature reflection (i.e. weeping and wailing) I do believe that Germany would have gone on to win the game even had that goal been allowed.

Finally, and through gritted teeth, good luck to Germany

And we have a Germany vs Argentina match to look forward to. That is going to blow all our socks off I reckon.

Yes! I'd forgotten that. In that case, I don't even need to grit my teeth to support Germany.

With apologies to any Argentinian members, I just can't bear the thought of Maradona's fat, smug face if Argentina go on to win the World Cup.

Brazil won easily enough and will play Netherlands in the quarter finals.

Now I'm crossing fingers for tomorrow's very difficult match between Portugal and Spain.

Certainly Spain. But I'm only worried about who will score more goals

I just hope both teams won't be too scared of each other.

It could be a great game - there is so much talent in both teams.

I think it's more likely to be a very nervous, edgy game in reality though. The best thing that could happen (for us neutrals) would be an early goal for either team, forcing the other to attack.

All I wish is that they just not pass the ball around until penalty shootouts...
That makes for a crummy match...and none of those two are above it.
