Bois Aussi and Slite snuck into the Casino through the service entrance. They had neither an invitation nor anyone to stand in for them in the tournament. They planned on finding a likely candidate in the crowd and buying his way in at some point. The tournament was scheduled to take three days to complete, so they felt that their plan had some merit.

As they lurked about in the lobby, they ducked quickly into a closet when they saw Biggles walking in wearing a sombrero and a linen business suit.

"He's actually going to try to enter the tournament?" asked Slite.

"Oui. He has what we call a flat learning curve. I suppose we could club him and take his money to aid in our venture, though..."

"Even though I suspect that the Americans sent him here to have him get eliminated by a foreign agent, they probably would have some objections of we did it ourselves, since we're supposed to be friends."

"Of course. Quelle domage. Ah, look! A possibility!"

They looked out at the crowd and saw two men walking in. One seemed to be counting the tiles in the floor and the other was ruggedly handsome, wearing a drooping flight cap. A small grey dog loped along behind him.

"I have seen that man in the barrios. He frequently skins the tourists and any sailors dim enough to enter into a game he is involved with. But he is able to keep from attracting the attentions of the Italian gentlemen who feel that they own the rights to all gambling here on this island."

"He might be our man, then. Isn't that the dog we saw talking to the woman? I want to talk with him and find out if Montsnmags is involved with all this..." The large dog loped off in pursuit of information.

Bois Aussi sidled toward the man in the cap and considered his options. Just as he arrived at Harv's side, they both looked up and were struck dumb by the arrival of a vision of beauty as Vera walked through the door.

As Vera walked into the Casino, she looked around. There, in a corner and looking vacuous, was Slick. He was already building up his personna to be the slack-witted subsitute that Montsnmags had to push in at the last minute or lose a place in the tournament. The good Doctor was lounging at the lobby bar, telling anyone who cared to listen that his other player was out with a sudden case of death by strangulation and he'd had to grab some guy off the street to sit in. He was checking to see if the rules allowed a substitution after he could find someone with some skills. (They didn't, but that was all a part of the cover.)

Next to Dr Montsnmags was a man wearing a white linen suit with the legs of the pants well above the high water mark. For some reason, he was wearing a fez cap, as well. Either he was another shill who was going to try to mop the floor with the other players at the right time, or a complete moron. After watching him spill his brightly pink colored drink down his front, she decided on moron. He didn't seem to care about the rules on subsitution.

Sitting in the back of the lobby was a nattily dressed man with a razor thin moustache and round spectacles. Beside him sat a large brown, black, and white dog. For some reason, the dog looke to be the smarter of the pair.

Another thin man was wandering round the lobby, head down. As he aimlessly passed by her, Vera heard him muttering, "One thousand three hudred fifty nine, one thousand three hundred sixty, one thousand.. Oh excuse me! Didn't mean to bump into you like that! Oh, bugger! One, two..."

She blinked and shook her head as a pair of wool socks rolled past her feet. She could have sworn that one of them had a safety pin in its cuff.

Along the front of the lobby, a large woman was swearing in German at a waiter as a small Japanese man stood by, looking slightly embarrassed.

Fortunately, she did not see that strange man who had told her that she had a sister last night in the bar. That was just toos trange for words, actually.

All of this had taken only two seconds to take in. Vera prided herself on being able to pick up the details in a flash.

Then, her eyes rounded to Vivaldi, who was sitting disinterestedly beside a man wearing a floppy aviator's cap. The man with hte thin moustache had just sidled up to him and started to engage a conversation when they both looked up at her. Her heart fluttered in a way she was quite unacustomed to. The fly-boy was absolutely gorgeous!

The afternoon preceding the Big Game, Vera Wayne was seated at the bar facing the entry. The events of the last few days had left her kind of shaky and resentful of being handled in such a violent way. She’d come to Cuba expecting to play poker, not to be tied meat. She’d never backed down from a fight but that succession of events was too wild even for her tastes. So she spent the remainder of the week before the poker game between her room, the restaurant and the bar. The bar was pretty empty at the moment with only a few rich European customers discussing in a corner and the barman catering to her glass. Even so, at every sip she took she’d instinctively survey the room.
-I must stop feeling so paranoid- She thought.
At that moment, an old man came in the bar from the lobby and looked around at the people inside. As he saw Vera, he froze. She’d seen his look.
-Crap! If he comes over here he’ll get the nutcracker job...-
She quickly averted her eyes to signify intent on protecting her privacy. No luck, he was still there gawking. And then from the corner of her eye she saw him approaching, immediately awaking survival reflexes, shifting slightly on her stool, setting up for a pre-emptive strike.
As he got to a safe distance, he stopped. As he felt that she knew he was there he said;
“Carole?... Is that you?...”
Vera was startled and lost her focus.
-What’s he blabbering?- She thought
She looked up to face him square and said:
“No!”
As she said it she noticed the old man was getting pretty pale for an attacker, if he ever was one at all... Letting all guards down she said:
“My name is Vera, my mother’s name is Carole”
The old man seemed stricken, even paler and his knees were clearly wobbling.
“Then it’s true!” He uttered in half voice.
“What? “ Said Vera.
At that point the man fell to his knees and said:
“You ... have... a sister...” And fell taking the surrounding chairs with him as he crashed down, unconscious.

Brian P. was seated at his desk when a teletype message came clicking away. He got to the machine and when it stopped he tore off the paper ribbon, slid the end in the crypting decoder and waited for the machine to do its thing. Finally he picked the sheet of paper from the typewriter it was hooked to and read the message.

-Hooked up with Biggles in Cuba -stop- Found Leterrible in local hospital suffering from shock. – stop- Maintaining surveillance. –stop-

Biggles awoke with a start and screamed, "Candy coated cockroaches!" Looking around, he realized that he was in a hospital room. This would not do! He had to be at the Casino in order to stop the nefarious plot of the Nazis and Japanese Imperialists!

He hopped down from the bed and looked around for his clothes. They were in the waste basket, being mostly shreds. He shuddered witht he memory of the night he had spent in the cantina to get them that way. That parrot was viscious!

He looked over at the bed next to his. A man with dark skin and a hooked nose lay there, seemingly in a coma. He wouldn't ming if Biggles borrowed his clothes then...

Leaving a note with a voucher for replacements, biggles struggled into the white linen suit. The other man was not wuite so portly and definitley shorter than he. Popping the red hat on his head for good measure, he snuck out of the hospital and scurried down the street towards the Casino.

This is reminding me of Harv and Vera in Panama where the plot lurched around like a drunken sailor at one of my family reunions...

"Three thousand, four hundred fifty seven!" Having counted all the tiles in the floor of the Casino's lobby, Howard Hughes was ready to proceed with the poker tournament. Briefly, he thought about the return home and what flying his new airplane was going to do to his already frazzled nerves.

Suddenly, he was hit with an idea. It was probably one of the best ideas he had ever come up with. Other than having all the tiles in his home hand numbered from the factory, that is. Now to find the perfect patsy...

He looked around the crowd. Over in a corner, the fellow witht he pilot's hat was engaged in conversation with a man sporting a ridiculously thin moustache. Money exchanged hands. Hughes began to hav hope. Now, if only the pilot went to the counter to register as a player...

He nearly did a handspring when just that eventuality took place.

He would soon be rid of the M.A.R.V.I.N. It was a small price to pay to lose the Goose, as well.
