Kobo have a very generous returns policy here so I wouldn’t mind checking out the new device…

I’ll be honest, the strip isn’t as distracting as I initially made it out to be, I may have been a little incendiary with that post and I have since ‘gotten used to it’… but that doesn’t mean I’m not disappointed!

Anyone here have a Sage with a perfect screen? I will say the text is razor sharp on my Sage vs my Oasis 3 and also the extra inch is great.
Personally I think they all have that strip, but depending on the ambient light not everyone may notice it.

The Libra 2 has even sharper text than the Sage, a better frontlight and better battery life, but ofc it's only 7'' vs 8'' and no stylus use. It's also a bit slower.

How do you explain that the Libra 2 has sharper text than the Sage? My guess is the flush vs. recessed screen has to be the difference. The Voyage has a flush screen, though, which everyone talks about all the time as the pinnacle of text display.

I prefer the more matte appearance of recessed screens, but dislike their tendency to gather dust along the edges of the bezel.

I hope the next generation of Kobos are much thinner and lighter.

I think flush vs recessed is the main factor in the Sage/Libra difference (which is quite small, but still noticeable), or perhaps an additional layer for stylus use in the Sage.

But yeah, flush vs recessed is not always the reason. The flush Voyage had a very sharp text, while the recessed Kobo Libra 1 had a lesser than average contrast. There obviously are other factors.

Apparently the new Paperwhite screen isn't as good as the Libra 2's, either.

There's a guy who does reviews on e-ink tablets called MyDeepGuide on youtube and he was extremely impressed with the Kobo Elipsa's screen. I'm not sure if it's the first time he had got his hands on the new generation of e-ink panel or what, but seeing his reaction was surprising.

Kindle Download Guide

I've been using Mobileread's Kindle Download Guide for .mobi public domain books on my Kindle. I've got a Sage on order which can read .mobi. Does anyone know if I download the Kindle Download Guide will it actually show up in my Sage library?

It should, but better use epub. Mobi support on a Kobo is not all that good. I tried a mobi on my Sage just now (downloaded from my Dropbox). No TOC (even though the book has one) and paragraphs have spaces between them (actually they don't in the book).

Thanks for the feedback. Can't wait till I get the Sage so I can play around with it!

Have the Paperwhite always lagged Kobo in screen quality?

No. The PW3 had a good screen, and so did the Voyage and the Oasis 3 (the latter is not as good as the latest Kobos, though).

So after my blow up I’ve decided to keep my Kobo Sage. I am in the process of selling my Kindle Oasis 3. The extra inch really sold it for me, and the strip down the side isn’t *too* distracting. I have another order coming in from Kobo, another sage - I’m going to open it up and see how the gradient works on the new model and probably end up sending it back or keeping it based on the uniformity of the screen. Wouldn’t go as far to say that Kobo have really improved on their hardware but I am enjoying my Kobo Sage now…

Yes, if you rename the file extension kepub.epub. It will download as a kepub. Just .kepub, no.
