The Yankee Club is the first in the Jake & Laura series by Michael Murphy. It has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Yankee-Club-J...dp/B00IHMFANK/

Spoiler:
Quote:
In Michael Murphy’s action-packed Prohibition-era novel of suspense, a mystery writer returns to the bright lights and dark alleys of New York City—uncovering a criminal conspiracy of terrifying proportions.

In 1933, America is at a crossroads: Prohibition will soon be history, organized crime is rampant, and President Roosevelt promises to combat the Great Depression with a New Deal. In these uncertain times, former-Pinkerton-detective-turned-bestselling-author Jake Donovan is beckoned home to Manhattan. He has made good money as the creator of dashing gumshoe Blackie Doyle, but the price of success was Laura Wilson, the woman he left behind. Now a Broadway star, Laura is engaged to a millionaire banker—and waltzing into a dangerous trap.

Before Jake can win Laura back, he’s nearly killed—and his former partner is shot dead—after a visit to the Yankee Club, a speakeasy dive in their old Queens neighborhood. Suddenly Jake and Laura are plunged into a conspiracy that runs afoul of gangsters, sweeping from New York’s private clubs to the halls of corporate power and to the White House itself. Brushing shoulders with the likes of Dashiell Hammett, Cole Porter, and Babe Ruth, Jake struggles to expose an inconspicuous organization hidden in plain sight, one determined to undermine the president and change the country forever.

Praise for The Yankee Club

“Glittering with a hint of Nick and Nora, Michael Murphy’s 1930s Manhattan provides a witty setting for murder and mayhem.”—Mary Daheim, bestselling author of The Alpine Yeoman

Frobisher’s Savage is the eighth and last (at least according to SYKM) in Leonard Tourney's Matthew and Joan Stock historical series. It's on US Kindle countdown for about 1 1/4 more days, at $0.99.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Frobishers-Sa...dp/B01DPFATG6/

Spoiler:
Quote:
“Tourney imaginatively creates historical fiction at its best.." - Library Journal

In 1576, Sir Martin Frobisher made the first of three voyages in search of a Northwest Passage.

He got as far as Canada, and brought back to England two “proofs” that he had reached Cathay: some black stones that he claimed contained gold, and an Eskimo.

Frobisher’s Eskimo is given the name “Adam Nemo” and is set down on the estate of a wealthy landowner as a servant.

He learns the strange language of his captors, he performs his duties more than conscientiously, and he keeps to himself.

And then everything changes.

Visiting his only friend on a nearby farm, a deaf and mute youth named Nicholas, he finds the boy cowering in a corner and everywhere signs of a bloody massacre.

When the townsmen whom Adam summons arrive, they discover the mutilated bodies of the farmer, his wife, and their two youngest children in the well.

Merchant Matthew Stock tries to counteract the town’s growing hysteria, which fastens itself upon those they consider strangers — the “savage” and the “idiot.”

Matthew and his forthright wife Joan are firmly convinced of the pair’s innocence, and they are determined that the rule of law shall prevail.

There is more than one hair-raising episode, and a breathless pursuit through a snowstorm, before Joan Stock finally unearths the evidence to identify the real murderer…

Frobisher’s Savage takes Leonard Tourney’s Elizabethan mystery series to a higher level with a compelling story about the nature of blind prejudice.

The Alarming Clock is the fifth (per Amazon) or tenth (per SYKM) in Michael Avallone's Ed Noon series.

It is free right now on Kindle US, no idea why or for how long.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Alarming-Cloc.../dp/B0097WEGUW

Spoiler:
Quote:
ED NOON MYSTERY #5

"That's just one of the reasons I had fallen for her so hard. She had my line of patter, my kind of thinking. I like people who laugh when they're facing a firing squad."-- Ed Noon, Private Eye

Ed Noon receives an odd alarm clock in the mail with a mysterious message that leads to a showdown with some very murderous ex-Nazis and a diabolical plot to sabotage America's next, most crucial A-bomb test. Noon is reunited with the lovely Alma Wheeler (from THE TALL DOLORES) and has his very first contact with the White House... a contact which will ultimately lead to his future employment as a spy for Mr. President in many cases and years to come.

ED NOON SERIES

The Adventures of Ed Noon, Private Eye, span over 30 novels written between 1953 and 1990. Noon starts out dirt poor with a tiny office in Midtown Manhattan (his "Mouse Auditorium") but success moves him to better digs, a lovely secretary (Melissa Mercer) and, eventually, the most important client of all: the President of the United States. The series concludes with a daring turn toward science fiction in the last two novels. Through it all, the wisecracking Noon is consistent: a movie and baseball-obsessed romantic who always fights the good fight. And, more often than not, wins.

Revenger is the second in the John Shakespeare historical series by Rory Clements. Per SYKM, it was the winner of the 2010 Historical Dagger Award. It has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle US.
link: https://www.amazon.com/Revenger-Shak.../dp/B00ICN50H0
Spoiler:
Quote:
There will be a terrible reckoning . . .

England is at war with Spain, and Queen Elizabeth's court is torn apart by brutal rivalries among ambitious young courtiers. The inimitable investigator John Shakespeare is dragged from retirement to work for the Earl of Essex, the queen's favorite. His mission is to unravel the mystery behind the doomed Roanoke colony in North America, but instead, he uncovers a plot to kill the aging queen.

With a plague devastating the country, Catholics being tortured, and John's wife keeping secrets from him, Shakespeare has his own survival to secure. Filled with colorful historical detail, Revenger is a stunning novel of savage betrayals and salacious intrigue.

Also, if you prefer to read in order, the first in the series, Martyr, is only $1.99, a very reasonable price for a backlist title, IMO, although it has been down to $0.99 in the past.
link: https://www.amazon.com/Martyr-First-.../dp/B00ICN507U
Spoiler:
Quote:
England is close to war. Within days the axe could fall on the neck of Mary, Queen of Scots, and Spain is already gathering a battle fleet to avenge her.

Tensions in Elizabeth I's government are at the breaking point. At the center of the storm is John Shakespeare, chief intelligencer in the secret service of Sir Francis Walsingham. When an intercept reveals a plot to assassinate England's "sea dragon," Francis Drake, Shakespeare is ordered to protect him. Busy fitting out his ships on land, Drake is frighteningly vulnerable. If he dies, England will be open to invasion.

From the splendor and intrigue of the royal court to the sleek warships of Her Majesty's Navy and the teeming brothels of Southwark, Shakespeare soon learns that nothing is as it seems …

The remaining books in the series (which I like) are also reasonably priced at $2.99. I don't have time right now to do all the blurbs, but here are some quick links:

The Murder Room is the 12th in the Adam Dalgliesh series by P.D. James. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Murder-Room-A.../dp/B000FBJF5A

Spoiler:
Quote:
Murders present meet murders past in P.D. James’s latest harrowing, thought-provoking thriller.

Commander Adam Dalgliesh is already acquainted with the Dupayne--a museum dedicated to the interwar years, with a room celebrating the most notorious murders of that time--when he is called to investigate the killing of one of the family trustees. He soon discovers that the victim was seeking to close the museum against the wishes of the fellow trustees and the Dupayne's devoted staff. Everyone, it seems, has something to gain from the crime. When it becomes clear that the murderer has been inspired by the real-life crimes from the murder room--and is preparing to kill again--Dalgliesh knows that to solve this case he has to get into the mind of a ruthless killer.

Tania Carver's CAGE OF BONES is on sale for $1.99 in the U.S. across all retailers today.

Super creepy novel.

Description:

"An abandoned building. A dank cellar. And inside it, a cage of bones. A shocking thriller for fans of Karin Slaughter.

Into the house. Down the stairs. Through the dripping dark of the cellar. Someone is there. Someone that shouldn’t be there. As a building awaits demolition, a horrifying discovery is made inside the basement: a cage made of human bones—with a terrified, feral child lurking within.

Unbeknownst to Detective Inspector Phil Brennan and psychologist Marina Esposito, they have disturbed a killer who has been operating undetected for thirty years. A killer who wants that boy back. But the cage of bones is also a box of secrets—secrets linking Brennan to the madman in their midst. With the death toll rising and the city reeling in terror, Brennan and Marina race to expose a predator more soullessly evil than any they’ve ever faced—and one who is hiding in plain sight.

If you’re obsessed with the horrifying realism of Jeffery Deaver and the disturbing plot twists of Mo Hayder, you must read this “utterly terrifying, yet believable chiller” (Daily Mirror) by Tania Carver."

When fugitive Italian monk Giordano Bruno—philosopher, magician, and heretical scientist—arrives in London, he’s only one step ahead of the Inquisition.

An undercover mission for Queen Elizabeth I and her spymaster provides added protection. Officially, Bruno is to take part in a debate on the Copernican theory of the universe at Oxford University; unofficially, he is to find out whatever he can about a Catholic plot to overthrow the queen.

But when his mission is dramatically thrown off course by a series of grisly deaths and the charms of a mysterious but beautiful young woman, he realizes that somewhere within Oxford’s private chambers lurks a brutal killer.

The Ghosts of Belfast is the first in the Jack Lennon/Belfast series by Stuart Neville has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle US. Per SYKM, it was also published as The Twelve, and was a finalist for a bunch of awards. SKYM also notes that this is a prequel of sorts, and that Jack Lennon appears only as a minor character in this title.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Ghosts-Belfas.../dp/B004HYHAX0

Spoiler:
Quote:
A New York Times Notable Book and Winner of The Los Angeles Times Book Prize, Neville's debut remains "a flat-out terror trip" (James Ellroy) and "one of the best Irish novels, in any genre, of recent times" (John Connolly).

Northern Ireland’s Troubles may be over, but peace has not erased the crimes of the past. Gerry Fegan, a former paramilitary contract killer, is haunted by the ghosts of the twelve people he slaughtered. Every night, at the point of losing his mind, he drowns their screams in drink. But it’s not enough. In order to appease the ghosts, Fegan is going to have to kill the men who gave him orders.

From the greedy politicians to the corrupt security forces, the street thugs to the complacent bystanders who let it happen, all are called to account. But when Fegan’s vendetta threatens to derail a hard-won truce and destabilize the government, old comrades and enemies alike want him dead.
