Well that shoots down my guess, purely based on the way the word looks, that Shchi was from Korea. The only one I recognized was Spanakopita having enjoyed that many times.

Yes, it certainly is! It's BBQ'd beef (sometimes pork is used but beef is more common,) that has been marinated in 'kouchijan,' delicious Korean hot pepper and soy bean paste, soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, garlic, and grilled over a Korean BBQ grill, sliced thinly off the bone and served. Bulgogi and Kalbi are the two most popular Korean beef dishes! Bulgogi usually uses sirloin sliced thin while Kalbi uses the short ribs.

Poutine is from Quebec, Canada

This is probably the only time that I will be able to answer even part of a Quiz question.

Good greasy French Fries covered in brown gravy and melted cheese! Poutine is a Quebec favorite! A lot of folks splash on some vinegar too!

OK, some hints...
Shchi is the 'last name' of a daily soup that you ALL know!
Yoshinoya is the oldest established restaurant chain that I mentioned before

Alright with that clue provided I have to guess that Shchi is Miso, and so from Japan?

That's sort of funny because until the mention of the restaurant I was going to guess that Donburi might be from Japan.

I also thought Donburi and/or Mokeka might be from Japan. Not because I know anything, but just because the spelling looks like it might be Japanese.

Nope!

And you'd be correct! Donburi IS from Japan. It's a bowl of rice that can be given different toppings. The restaurant chain, "Yoshinoya," is famous for its 'Gyudon' otherwise known as beef donburi, sliced beef and onions in a sauce over a bowl of rice. Served with pickled ginger and red pepper!

Sorry, Daithi. Too slow. And Mokeka is from an entirely different side of the world!

Ok.... 'shchi' is the last part of the name of a red soup served before dinner in on of the largest countries in the world...

Mokeka is a seafood stew made with coconut milk (but is not Asian!)

We'll give this one to you... Gai IS chicken in Thai. 'Larbgai' is a Thai minced chicken dish made with sliced shallot, spring onion, mint leaves, lime juice, fish sauce, and of course, Thai 'prik' (birdseye chili.) Delicious! Easy to find in every Thai restaurant and on every street corner vendor's stall!

Given those clues, could it be Borscht from Russia? Made with beetroot.

Yes! It is Borschi! Or as we call it, Borscht from Russia!

Balut - Phillipines Sneaky Snake
Larbgai - Thai Sneaky Snake
Poutine - Quebec, Canada red_pheonix
Bakso - ?
Donburi - Japan Hamlet53
Spanakopita - Greece Sneaky Snake
Mokeka - ?
Shchi - Russia PDurant
Laksa - Malaysia (Indonesia) Sneaky Snake
Bulgogi - ? Korea maianhvk

That leaves only one more, Bakso, which is an Indonesian meatball sold from street vendor carts. I think that if you guys had difficulties with the popular ones, you'd never tumble to Bakso.

Oh... Mokeka is a Portugeses/Brazillian dish made from mixed seafoods, green pepper, chopped tomatoes, all cooked in coconut milk. Quick, easy, and delicious. A bit of salt and pepper, and a dash of red pepper complete it.

It seems that Sneaky Snake had four correct out of the group, so lets let her give us the next question. Sneaky... take it away!

I learnt a new word today. "purpurin". (yay for Montalbano!)

What is it? Where does it come from? What is/was it used for?

The thing not the word.
