Having Googled "darwin racism" (No, I did not bing it) I found several discussions, each of which proving, beyond any reasonable doubt, that Charles Darwin absolutely simultaneously was and was not racist. Not surprisingly, most of the sites that "prove" his racist are creationist leaning (to say the least).
I personally thought this article helped clear the air.
Very good clarification!

I've seen those arguments from the Creationists. Because their arguments against evolution are so weak, they invariable resort to ad hominem attacks against Darwin the man, but from everything I've read from reliable sources, it appears that for the day and age in which he lived, he was very progressive on matters of race.

Again with the spoiler tags to warn the faint of heart (or better of sense!)

WARNING: Bathroom humor/language!

Spoiler:
.....In other words, what is it that inspires you to laugh? It varies from person to person, but luckily God, in his infinite wisdom, gave us a great starter kit. To put it quite simply, the penis is funny on its own. The thing looks like a long-lost Marx brother and yet it is the instrument of reproduction. And let's fess up to the truth here: When it takes control of the brain—which is most of the time—it actually acts like a Marx brother. And that's when the fun explodes, so to speak. Then there is the fart. You have to be brain-dead not to think a fart is funny. Sure, laughing at a run-of-the-mill bodily function is juvenile, but a brilliantly lit one—one that sparkles and flashes like a Fourth of July fireworks display—is a joy to behold and puts a smile on any young man's face.

UPDATE on quotation from A Briefer History of Time

On 08-14-2010 at 07:51 AM, I posted the following quote:

Quote:
Originally Posted by WT Sharpe View Post
.....Even if there is only one possible unified theory, it is just a set of rules and equations. What is it that breathes fire into the equations and makes a universe for them to describe? The usual approach of science of constructing a mathematical model cannot answer the questions of why there should be a universe for the model to describe. Why does the universe go to all the bother of existing? Is the unified theory so compelling that it brings about its own existence? Or does it need a creator, and if so, does He have any other effect on the universe? And who created Him?
.....Up to now, most scientists have been too occupied with the development of new theories that describe the universe to ask why. On the other hand, the people whose business it is to ask why, the philosophers, have not been able to keep up with the advance of scientific theories. In the eighteenth century, philosophers considered the whole of human knowledge, including science, to be their field and discussed questions such as whether the universe had a beginning. However, in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, science became too technical and mathematical for the philosophers, or anyone else except a few specialists. Philosophers reduced the scope of their inquiries so much that Wittgenstein, the most famous philosopher of the twentieth century, said, "The sole remaining task for philosophy is the analysis of language." What a comedown from the great tradition of philosophy from Aristotle to Kant!
.....If we do discover a complete theory, it should in time be understandable in broad principle by everyone, it just a few scientists. Then we shall all, philosophers, scientists, and just ordinary people, be able to take part in the discussion of the question of why it is that we and the universe exist. If we find the answer to that, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason—for then we would know the mind of God.
..........— Stephen Hawking (1942.-.), British theoretical physicist, author, formerly Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge for thirty years. A Briefer History of Time by Stephen Hawking with Leonard Mlodinow (2005), Chapter 12: Conclusion.
The quotation of Hawking's book was accurate. However, Hawking's quotation of Wittgenstein may not be.

Here's what Wikiquote has to say about it:

Quote:
Disputed

..* The sole remaining task for philosophy is the analysis of language.
....o Though this has been quoted extensively as if it were a statement of Wittgenstein, it was apparently first published in A Brief History of Time (1988) by Stephen Hawking, p. 175, where it is presented in quotation marks and thus easily interpreted to be a quotation, but could conceivably be Hawking paraphrasing or giving his own particular summation of Wittgenstein's ideas, as there seem to be no published sources of such a statement prior to this one. The full remark by Hawking reads:

......Philosophers reduced the scope of their inquiries so much that Wittgenstein, the most famous philosopher of this century, said, "The sole remaining task for philosophy is the analysis of language." What a comedown from the great tradition of philosophy from Aristotle to Kant!
Jeeze! If you can't trust a theoretical physicist to be meticulously accurate in their writings, who can you trust?

.....The author believes that epistemology has kidnapped modern philosophy, and well nigh ruined it; he hopes for the time when the study of the knowledge-process will be recognized as the business of the science of psychology, and when philosophy will again be understood as the synthetic interpretation of all experience rather than the analytic description of the mode and process of experience itself. Analysis belongs to science, and gives us knowledge; philosophy must provide a synthesis or wisdom.

Well, that's kinda what Asimov said when asked what he'd do if he had 24 hours to live --- "Write faster!"

And there is that perspective, but must say I tend to come down with the shakers on this one.

.....Read not to contradict and confute; nor to believe and take for granted; nor to find talk and discourse; but to weigh and consider. Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested; that is, some books are to be read only in parts; others to be read, but not curiously; and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention. Some books also may be read by deputy, and extracts made of them by others; but that would be only in the less important arguments, and the meaner sort of books, else distilled books are like common distilled waters, flashy things. Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man. And therefore, if a man write little, he had need have a great memory; if he confer little, he had need have a present wit: and if he read little, he had need have much cunning, to seem to know, that he doth not. Histories make men wise; poets witty; the mathematics subtile; natural philosophy deep; moral grave; logic and rhetoric able to contend.
