Got my new Oasis today, first impressions

I got a new replacement again today, because the light was very uneven from left to right. the side across from the lights was much darker.

First glance at the new one the screen is darker / more yellow - that may be because it is cold?

I am going to let them sit side by side, and then have my GF swap them around so I do not know which is which ( iocane powder style ), and see which one looks better. later tonight.

I could still tell.

I can see it is much "yellower" than the old one.

What was wrong with the first one?

On my first one, it was like the light would not go all the way across the screen.

So the right half would be well lit, and the left half would be murky.

I didn't notice this on my old paperwhite, possibly because the light goes bottom to top, instead of side to side

I can see it is much "yellower" than the old one.

Putting the leds on one side instead of at the top is going to make producing an even light much more difficult.

I think it has to do with the direction of your eyes' movement, left to right vs downward.

I switched my voyage's orientation to landscape and sure enough it is very obvious one side is lighter than the other.

would be interested in your oppinion on the replacement. I'm in the same boat - I notice a clear light gradient from left to right on the new Oasis 2. Unfortunately, I also notice a clear top-bottom gradient on my Voyage (even after several replacements) which makes me believe that Amazon currently is just not able to produce even lighted screens and that all of them have those gradients. I'm currently reading with my 2011 basic Kindle again without touchscreen or lighting, as those uneven lighted screens make me furious while reading :/

If you are one of the minority whom this annoys, you're probably not going to be happy with any front-lit device, unfortunately. The very nature of a light-guide is that light intensity inevitably falls off with distance from the source.

Most people (including me) don't notice it, but it's always there if you look for it (or, in your case, if you can't help noticing it).

Yeah, you're probably right :/ I wonder if putting LEDs on both sides could solve those gradient problems, but then again they're most likely not fixing anything that only a small minority of people perceives. It's really sad as I'm actually quite happy with everything else on their devices...

I went to our local Amazon store and held the new Oasis. I found I preferred the feel and size of the Original Oasis. I would love to have the Original made a little thicker to hold the battery and to give a better grip with the new Oasis software. Thinner is not always better.

Fortunately, my eyeballs can't see a gradient on mine even when looking for it. When I tried taking a picture, then I could see a slight difference at the very edge.

I think it is defenitely the case that the other models were much less noticeable.

The lights going up and down, you can go through the gradient gradually as you go down the screen.

Once I saw it on the side-to-side gradient on every line, I could not un-see it, and it started getting really distracting.

I really want the 7" screen, but If the replacement doesn't have a really good light guide, i may just have to return it, and wait and hope they do a 7: paper white next year.

Common sense dictates that on a large screen, it makes sense to have the light shining across the short side of the screen rather than the long side. Whatever gradient there is across the short side, it would inevitably be worse across the long side.
