Free on Amazon UK - Violation by Sally Spencer

Spoiler:
Children in Harrisburg, Virginia are being targeted…

Only Lieutenant Mike Kaleta can stop him striking again!

It was Kaleta’s wife who wanted them to move from New York to Harrisburg, a medium-sized city in Virginia.

Now she’s his ex-wife.

Her loathing of him is only equalled by that of her father – who just happens to be the mayor.

The chief of police, who hates college boys on principle, is not his biggest fan, either - all of which makes it harder for him to track down the monster who has so far attacked five little children.

The attacks are sparking outrage and fear among the city’s parents and politicians alike.

And worse is yet to come, because the deeper Kaleta and his partner, Sergeant Carrie Williams, get into the investigation, the more it seems to him that there are people – powerful people – who will do all they can to make sure he does not succeed…

Can the determined pair really discover the truth?

Free on Amazon UK - Fireball by Peter MacAlan

Spoiler:
In the lush Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, the tranquil region surrounding Lake Placid is in for a shock…

Mike Leo, a seasoned policeman in the area finds himself chasing down the perpetrators of an unsuccessful bank robbery; two males and possibly one female.

The two males, Jeb & Lee have picked up a young and impressionable hitchhiker, Judy and convinced her to act as getaway driver.

However, when the robbery doesn’t go to plan, the three escape into the forest. Unbeknownst to them, they have Officer Leo in tow not far behind…

Meanwhile, Hetty Redburn is the fire control officer working at the Saranac Fire Authority Centre. The one in charge of fire safety in Adirondack Park.

he is already having a bad day due to a fight wither son, however things are about to get considerably worse…

Colonel Paul Moller, an Air Force pilot is taking off when he and his crew begin to have trouble with all four engines of the plane. They quickly realise there is nothing more that can be done and bale out, leaving the plane to crash to the ground in a fiery explosion.

When he lands, he meets a man names John, who helps him deal with the injuries sustained in baling out. Moller is also informed that a large fire has broken out in the forest and could well be moving their way.

In their move to escape the fire, they bump into Kathy Ryan, who appears to be a journalist looking for a scoop on the fire. The three make their way together towards any safety they can find.

So begins the mad scramble to safety for all those within the reach of the violent, uncontrollable fire; devouring all in its path.

Can the fire control teams to anything to quell this wild beast?

Free on Amazon UK - Dear Mr. Holmes: Seven Holmes on the Range Mysteries by Steve Hockensmith

Spoiler:
Big Red and Old Red Amlingmeyer have starred in five "Holmes on the Range" novels, rustling up award nominations and fans aplenty as they cracked mysteries using the methods of their hero, Sherlock Holmes. How did these Old West drifters first discover Holmes, though? What were they doing before their novel adventures began? And how did their early, awkward stabs at "deducifying" turn out? These seven short stories provide the answers.

In "Dear Mr. Holmes," Old Red first gets the itch to turn detective -- and just in time, too, because a killer's stalking him and his brother along a Kansas cattle trail. In "Gustav Amlingmeyer, Holmes of the Range," Old Red's attempt to settle down and open his own "cafay" goes haywire when one of the customers gets a side order of arsenic with his steak and potatoes. In "Wolves in Winter," Big Red and Old Red go up against deadly predators of both the two- and four-legged variety. And the adventure continues in four more stories (most of them originally published in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine).

I read some of this series in HC from our local library back in DTB days, and enjoyed them. Per SYKM, the first one, Holmes on the Range, was a finalist for a bunch of "Best First Novel" awards.

Although some of the later titles are only $3.99 right now, sadly Range is $7.99 right now at Kindle US - why would you ever make the first in a series more than the rest of them???? Anyway, I've now e-Reader-IQ'd it, and hopefully can catch it at a more reasonable price some time in the future.

[edit: looks as if Minotaur may still have rights to the first one, but not the others...]

Well, you're in luck.

Holmes on the Range has now dropped to $2.99 at Kobo & Amazon, and presumably elsewhere in Canada & the US, apparently as some sort of Macmillan sale on Sherlock Holmes pastiche titles, which includes series titles by Laurie R. King (#2-4 of Mary Russell series; #1 has a version by Allison & Busby in Canada which is couponable and just over $4; the Macmillan version does not appear to be on sale) & Michael Robertson (#2-5 of Baker Street Letters) for $2.99-$3.99 CAD.

I do think this is the quickest I have ever wished for a title to drop in price, and then had it actually happen....woo-hoo!

Oh, and the prices are good at Kobo US as well...

Quick! Use your magical pricedropping wish powers on Arcadia Books, who have for some bizarre reason removed their couponable titles from every store except for Amazon, and are holding hostage the 1st-in-series of several authors I've gotten through their rebellious clone-successor Orenda!

Anyway, the Hodder & Stoughton pricedrops for (excellent and recommended) Icelandic author Yrsa Sigurðardóttir mentioned earlier for the UK have expanded to Canada (where some of the titles are out from HarperCollins, and thus not on sale): linkage for author sorted by price.

Also in terms of additional cross-continental pricedrops for both Canada (possibly also the US, if Hodder has the rights there) & UK starting at $0.99/£0.99 (linkage goes to Kobo Canada unless otherwise noted, so you can browse the prices without having to be here):
  • Award-winning Swedish author Mons Kallentoft (SYKM, Wikipedia), nearly the entirety translated to date of whose Malin Fors series starring a Detective Inspector in Linköping can be had for $3.99 or less per book, with 2 volumes (including the 1st-in-series) for just $0.99/£0.99. This was on my wishlist to try, and for comparison purposes, the omnibus edition of just the first 5 is $34.99 CAD. ETA: The UK has the missing #2 which is apparently not in the Kobo CA catalogue, but it's not on sale, and goes for what seems to be the regular £5.99 price.
  • Award-winning Italian author Marco Vichi (SYKM, Wikipedia)'s Inspector Bordelli series set in 1960s Italy. #1-2 are $0.99/£0.99, #3 is $2.99/£1.99 and has won the Premio Fedeli and been a finalist for the International Dagger Award.
  • British author Alys Clare (SYKM, Wikipedia), a number of medieval mysteries in assorted series, 3 each at the $0.99/$2.99/$3.99 tiers and corresponding UK equivalent prices.
  • British author Ted Allbeury's (SYKM, Wikipedia) mostly standalone vintage espionage thrillers written during the 1970s (apparently from personal experience, as he was an intelligence officer in the SOE according to Wikipedia). There were at least 13 at the $0.99/£0.99 mark.
  • A number of vintage literary and romantic suspenses (some of them Edgar finalists, according to SYKM) by Mary Stewart (SYKM, ISFDB, Wikipedia), perhaps best known for her Merlin fantasy quadrilogy (also on sale). At least 5 non-fantasy novels were at the $0.99/£0.99 mark.

And some (mostly) UK-only pricedrops from Quercus:
  • Martin Walker's (SYKM, Wikipedia) popular award-nominated Bruno Chief of Police series set in the Périgord region of France. Only in the UK (HarperCollins has the North American rights). #2, #5, #7, & #9 are a mere £0.99, rest of the series is £1.99-£2.99. We've previously gotten #1 as a freebie, and there's a permafreebie short story: Bruno et le Père Noël available at multiple retailers in the UK.
  • Danish author Steffen Jacobsen's (SYKM) Sanders & Jensen series pairing up an ex-cop turned PI and and a current Detective Superintendent in Copenhagen, #1 is £0.99, #2 is £1.99, and a standalone novel is £2.99.

#2 is also on sale in Canada for $2.99 CAD (for some reason #1 isn't available at all), but the standalone is $9.99.

Last edited by ATDrake; 04-19-2017 at 05:13 PM. Reason: Fix linkage. And the entire series, sadly, cannot be had for under $3.99 for the lot.
