I remember buying and reading BOOKS OF BLOOD when the cheesy paperbacks came out with the "halloween mask" covers.

Good stuff

I admit, the Halloween mask covers put me off from actually trying the books for a bit.

By the way, those three books are only half of the Books of Blood. In the US books 4-6 were published as The Inhuman Condition, In The Flesh and Cabal (though the Cabal novella wasn't part of Books of Blood in the original UK editions).

I've read and enjoyed several of Clive's novels, but none of them ever matched The Books of Blood (Weaveworld and The Great and Secret Show came closest).

I do love all three movies he's directed himself. (Good) Horror movies have a long tail and eventually pay out. I've never understood why some producer didn't continue supporting him as a director.

Neverland by Douglas Clegg is $0.99 at Amazon US.

I've not read Neverland yet, but Clegg is a very good writer. And his books rarely seem to go on sale.

Quote:
Fear is a shack in the woods. Horror is what they worship there..

Page-turning suspense and supernatural horror blend in this classic novel of innocence corrupted. What lurks within the shack? What kinds of dangerous — and deadly — games do the children play there?

For years, the Jackson family vacationed at their matriarch's old Victorian house on Gull Island, a place of superstition and legend off the southern coast of the U.S. One particular summer, young Beau follows his cousin Sumter into a shack hidden among the brambles and windswept trees near bluffs overlooking the sea.

And within Neverland, the mysteries and terror grow...

Neverland is my favorite Douglas Clegg novel. It reminded me somewhat of Ray Bradbury's work.

If you join his mailing list (as I have), there are often some special sales just for being on his list.

Anyone ever heard of the Scottish author William Meikle? I hadn't either. But he appears to have written a zillion books (estimated). Now, they all look schlocky. But they also look fun.

He also seems to enjoy writing new stories about William Hope Hodgson's Carnacki, Arthur Conan Doyle's Professor Challenger and supernatural Sherlock Holmes.

Ereaderiq shows he regularly puts his books on sale for $0.99.

Two that I picked up on the cheap are:

Green Grow the Rashes and Other Stories - Free!

Quote:
These seven short stories, all previously published in magazines or anthologies, contain magic, monsters, ghosts, history, beer, Scotland, scifi, fantasy, horror, singing, more beer and fun.
Crustaceans - $0.99

An obvious homage to Guy N. Smith's infamous Crabs novels.

Quote:
From Scottish writer William Meikle comes a novel that is a welcome return to those tomes of pure enjoyment that we read with guilt in our early teens, in the tradition of James Herbert’s THE RATS and Guy N. Smith’s NIGHT OF THE CRABS.

It begins with a dead whale on a Boston shoreline--not in itself an unusual occurrence. But the things that claw their way out of the blubber are very unusual indeed. A cast of giant crabs, evolved over centuries, descends on a small coastal town and, having feasted, make their way to the city using the sewer system. Soon they are swarming around Manhattan, hunted and harried by a SWAT team tasked with ridding the city of the menace...before the menace gets big enough to rid itself of the city.

"I don’t think you can have much more fun reading a book than “Crustaceans”. It is one hell of a ride that will keep you turning the pages as fast as you can read them. There is bloodshed galore, epic man vs. crab battles and there is even room for some heartfelt moments." - Famous Monsters of Filmland

I've heard of him and read only a few short stories. He may have used Mobileread to promote his stuff; I just can't remember.

I enjoy the sub-genre of occult detective fiction, so you may wish to check out his Carnacki series, which is a continuation of a character created by one of the greatest writers EVER of weird/horror fiction: William Hope Hodgson.

I'm not a big fan of continuations of old characters, so his Carnacki, Professor Challenger and Sherlock Holmes stuff isn't calling out my name. I'll read it in a book of shorts. But I could do without.

SWAN SONG by Robert R. McCammon is $2.99 at Amazon USA

Quote:
Swan is a nine-year-old Idaho girl following her struggling mother from one trailer park to the next when she receives visions of doom—something far wider than the narrow scope of her own beleaguered life. In a blinding flash, nuclear bombs annihilate civilization, leaving only a few buried survivors to crawl onto a scorched landscape that was once America.

In Manhattan, a homeless woman stumbles from the sewers, guided by the prophecies of a mysterious amulet, and pursued by something wicked; on Idaho’s Blue Dome Mountain, an orphaned boy falls under the influence of depraved survivalists and discovers the value of a killer instinct; and amid the devastating dust storms on the Great Plains of Nebraska, Swan forms a heart-and-soul bond with an unlikely new companion. Soon they will cross paths. But only Swan knows that they must endure more than just a trek across an irradiated country of mutated animals, starvation, madmen, and wasteland warriors.

Swan’s visions tell of a coming malevolent force. It’s a shape-shifting embodiment of the apocalypse, and of all that is evil and despairing. And it’s hell-bent on destroying the last hope of goodness and purity in the world. Swan is that hope. Now, she must fight not only for her own survival but for that of all mankind.

A winner of the Bram Stoker Award and a finalist for the World Fantasy Award, Swan Song has become a modern classic, called “a chilling vision that keeps you turning pages to the shocking end” by John Saul and “a long, satisfying look at hell and salvation” by Publishers Weekly.
Basically, this is similar to Stephen King's THE STAND and like that book, there is a break from "Book 1" to "Book 2" about halfway through. When I was a teenager I read the first half (called "Book 1") and then I took what was supposed to be a break of a day or two. I never went back to it. I was dumb because I had absolutely loved it. Alas when I was younger, I would "half read" almost as many books as I read in total. Now I just bought it for $2.99 with the intention to start reading it all over and finish this time!
