I am not a hunter (except for bargains ), so I could be wrong, but I believe that in this area, any wild pig/hog--regardless of gender--is called a "boar." I'll have to investigate. A "funny." There is a company in the U.S., at least, called Boar's Head. I know them as makers or marketers of high-quality sandwich meats. But, I've long wondered why they chose the name Boar's Head. It sounds kind of gross to me, and there's very little in a pig's head that I would knowingly eat. But, apparently it is a popular brand here in the States.

Maybe Mr. Brunckhorst (the name sounds like some kind of German sausage, to me) took the name from the Boar's Head Feast or the Boar's Head Inn. I suppose that both of those were reputable, respected endeavors to people of the time.

Getting back to the Boer War, during my school days we had an older neighbour living on his own who had fought in the Boer War. My brother and I would sometimes visit him and have a chat. Not so much reminiscences about the war, which was probably still harrowing for him so many years later.

It's fiction, but Sandi Toksvig has written a well researched novel set in the Boer War called Valentine Gray. Available as an e-book.

Yes, non-French speakers often do mispronounce "Froide". The following link takes you to Google Translate, where if you click on the speaker icon you'll hear the correct (French) pronunciation of "Froide".

OT: I love Google Translate. I frequently consult it when reading foreign language passages in my English-language books (e.g., the Mexican Spanish in Cormac McCarthy's Border Trilogy and the Italian in Donna Leon's Commissario Brunetti books) and hearing the correct pronunciation helps me better remember their meaning.

It's never too late to learn or brush up on a foreign language. Like almost everything else in this digital age, there's a wealth of apps and online classes that make it très facile to do so.
