A "funny." There is a company in the U.S., at least, called Boar's Head. I know them as makers or marketers of high-quality sandwich meats. But, I've long wondered why they chose the name Boar's Head. It sounds kind of gross to me, and there's very little in a pig's head that I would knowingly eat. But, apparently it is a popular brand here in the States.

Getting back to the Boer War, during my school days we had an older neighbour living on his own who had fought in the Boer War. My brother and I would sometimes visit him and have a chat. Not so much reminiscences about the war, which was probably still harrowing for him so many years later.
It's fiction, but Sandi Toksvig has written a well researched novel set in the Boer War called Valentine Gray. Available as an e-book. |

A boar's head could be the centrepiece of a feast, brought in with ceremony.
![]() Bedecked with bay and rosemary" springs to mind. let me see if I got it right, and where it's from. Ah - the Boar's Head carol. |

Other Mobilereaders--note that the results are sorted low to high by price, so don't accidentally go past the "line" and buy one that you don't want to pay for. Froide, has there ever been a Charles River Editors booklet on your namesake, Sigmund? ha |

People often mispronounce it, though, I'm sure. It takes a little effort for English speakers, at least, to pronounce the first part of the word. Reminds me of the football great Brett Favre. Everyone pronounces his last name "Farv," because it is much easier to pronounce than how it should actually should be pronounced, which is something like, "Favr." I wish that I had paid bettter attention and applied myself more in French in high school and college. I'm doing research work now in which a great number of the scholarly articles and books that I would like to (so far, am not required to) read are in French. Let that be a lesson to all of you kids out there in MobileReader Land who are in school. ha Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 09-12-2016 at 07:58 PM. |

OT: I love Google Translate. I frequently consult it when reading foreign language passages in my English-language books (e.g., the Mexican Spanish in Cormac McCarthy's Border Trilogy and the Italian in Donna Leon's Commissario Brunetti books) and hearing the correct pronunciation helps me better remember their meaning. It's never too late to learn or brush up on a foreign language. Like almost everything else in this digital age, there's a wealth of apps and online classes that make it très facile to do so.

Packt, the technology publisher, is having what they are calling "Android Week 2016." I have long thought of Packt as being special among technology books publishers in that they aggressively market their books and often heavily discount them. However, this sale may be the best that I've ever seen from them.
Let me let them tell you, in their own words, what this sale is about: Are you excited by Android Nougat as we are? We love Android and its Open Source ethos, which is why we're offering twenty of our top Android titles at 50% off for one week only. But that's not all - all Android week, you can grab any of these titles as part of our amazing 5-for-$50 build-your-own-bundle deal. We're also giving away Android eBooks all week. There's never been a better time to dive into Android development! Here are links to two important URL's concerning this sale: Half Price Books. The Free Book of the Day. The titles of the half price books also changes daily. There are about a half a dozen of those each day. Unfortunately, I am a little late learning about this sale and today's freebie is already the third one of the week. Sorry. However, at this writing, you have slightly over 20 hours to claim your free book for today. The title is Mastering Android NDK. Here's information, from Packt, about this title: Android NDK is used for multimedia applications that require direct access to system resources. NDK is also the key for portability, which in turn allows a reasonably comfortable development and debugging process using familiar tools such as GCC and Clang toolchains. This is a hands-on guide to extending your game development skills with Android NDK. The book takes you through many clear, step-by-step example applications to help you further explore the features of Android NDK and some popular C++ libraries and boost your productivity by debugging the development process. Through the course of this book, you will learn how to write portable multi-threaded native code, use HTTP networking in C++, play audio files, use OpenGL ES 3, and render high-quality text. Each chapter aims to take you one step closer to building your application. By the end of this book, you will be able to create an engaging, complete gaming application! I'll commit myself to letting you know every day, for the rest of the week, what each day's freebie is. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 09-13-2016 at 11:01 PM. |
