I got my Max yesterday pm. I am now playing with it and I'm bit dissapointed with the quality of the screen.
It's my first eink device and I have never seen one before, not even a Kindle... Thing is there is significant ghosting, i am reading a pdf through the onyx app and i can see still fadded the "loading document" icon in the background, like a watermark. Or if i change menu from "now reading" to "library", i can see still as watermark the previous menu... There is also a distinct black line like an ecliptic on the top part of the screen... Are all these normal for an eink device?? I paid 700 euros to have something crystal clear and sadly it doesnt seem to be the case. Added some pics, where you can see the blotches in the white areas. I got the same thing. I can still see somewhat what the earlier page showed. Also, I think the screen is a bit yellow.

Ghosting is normal for E-Ink if you are only doing the faster redraws on each page. If you want to remove the ghosting, you have to enable the full refresh every time you change the screen. That's slower and there's more flashing going on (to wipe out the ghosting), so it's usually not enabled by default.

![]() Back to the ghosting issue, as rkomar said it's normal. The M96 model does not offer system wide option for setting full refresh AFAIK, instead you have to long press the Home button every time you want the ghosting to go away. Or, if you are using Onyx Neo Reader, open the Settings by pressing the Home button once and look for Refresh setting where you can set it to Always. ![]() To make sure you are using Onyx Neo Reader long press on some book on the Home screen to get the Open with dialog. ![]() My wild guess is it works in a similar way on your Max. |

@Netgeo,
Rkomar has right,all E-ink devices have a ghosting effect. Some people prefer a light ghosting effect than a full refresh of the page. Normally, you could select at what frequency the refresh is done : every page, 1/3, 1.5, etc. But don't be afraid of the ghosting effect, with the time it will not be a problem for you. The advantages of E-ink are more important and with some texts, you'll forget it. In your case it's only more evident, because you pass from a display (menu) to an other very different. Quote:

I don't have the MAX, but since it runs android you should be able to install a vnc viewer and connect to your computer with it (where you have to setup a vnc server, of course). It's not super fast, but works ok-ish on my T68, so I would imagine on the 13 inch screen it could be a decent experience for typing and stuff.
If you're on Linux, you could also try XSDL xserver, but at least on my T68 I found the CPU to struggle a bit. I haven't been able to figure or if the MAX has a dual core CPU, or the same single core as the T68 (found claims that it has a dual core, but most sellers don't seem to mention anything like that). |

The appearance of this product on the market also made me think how the world made this distorted circle. There were perfectly usable and affordable matte displays back in the long gone days, the genre deliberately killed by the industry in favour of the shiny, glossy, horrible displays, and now we have indie developers trying to kind of rectify the situation with largely overpriced, slow, monochrome eink displays. On the other hand, maybe this artificially created usability problem of glossy displays accelerated the development of eink displays that can now act as a remedy to the problem. The introduction of the devices of mass eye destruction led to the start of eye friendly revolution... If Dasung is successful with their screen then who knows, maybe Onyx will enter this field too. I gather that the 13.3" screen is all the same, and it's just a matter of having a better controller, firmware etc. |

Guys thank you all for the help, applying the refresh per every page makes a difference!
Would this lower the life expectancy of the reader? I can still see a thin pencil line on the screen, like someone drew it with a compass, not that it matters but just wondering why its there. Thanks again. |

Yes,it's sure, I know it. But it's was the only thing that I could imagine to reply at Netgeo : more activity => more battery used. You've right, no real effect on the battery life.
