[Assistant store manager walks by Echo display. Does double take.]
"Where did that come from? I didn't know we sold those."
[Echo's light turns red. Cue ominous music.]
"Manager must have forgotten to mention it."
[Shrugs and walks off.]
[Echo's light turn blue, and then off.]

The Tap arrived yesterday while I was out grocery shopping with the wife. Nice device with most satisfactory volume and rich sound. The downside is that there's no way to enable always-on and the voice remote doesn't work with it, so if you want to talk with it you have to touch it first, and since there's no wake word, it feels less personal and more like interacting with a computer. But, hey! It's portable and has Bluetooth, so you can listen to your devices anywhere without earbuds or headphones. Tap v Dot was no contest for me, since we already own an Echo.

My grocery store is Fred Meyer, a Northwest chain of Kroger owned super stores similar to Walmart. They have dedicated displays for Amazon, Apple, and Samsung devices in their electronics department. Compared to Best Buy, it's a better place to compare these devices. Pricing is full retail and they rarely have decent sales, except on Black Friday when the sales are really good.

I'm hoping they get the Tap soon and eventually the Dot when it's released to the public.

Don't know why Amazon didn't have an always on option like the Echo. Lack of that feature was a deal breaker for me.

Always on & listening for the wake word doesn't play well with battery operation. A design consideration, IMO.

Of course, an alternative option might have been to operate this way when on battery and allow always on while on external power...

Rich
I highly doubt that's a factor.
If the thing is turned on, it's using power anyway, and monitoring for all sorts of input signals, just like the vast majority of modern devices.
I have no reason to think that monitoring for a wake word uses any more power than monitoring for a remote control operation, Bluetooth connection etc.

How to buy a Dot without owning an Echo

That leads me to believe the Dot is largely intended for existing Echo owners looking to add Alexa to additional rooms of the house. But there is a workaround: If you enable the microphone in the Amazon shopping app on your smart device and say, "Add Echo Dot to shopping cart," you can buy one without owning any other Amazon devices—for now.

I actually prefer the tap, as the always on is too battery intensive. I plan to use the Dot to stream workout music, so I don't care if it is off when the tuner is set to HDMI. It will actually prevent it from accidentally coming on, which my Echo does every now and then.

I love the cordless aspect of the tap, but the battery didn't even last an entire day. That means it would have to be on the charging station, eliminating the cord free aspect. So I have to figure out a place to use it sporadically. If the speaker was as good as the Echo, I might put up with the limited battery life, but it is definitely inferior. Don't know if I am going to keep it.

It'd be nice if Amazon would sell charging cradles as an accessory. That way you could keep one handy in several locations.

I haven't tried to max my battery out yet, but Amazon claims they'll last 9 hours, which, if true, is fine for most of my off-cradle needs. How long did yours last?
