Better Traffic and Revenue Forecasting by Luis Willumsen
Free Demand and revenue forecasting for transport has an inconsistent track record. There are several reasons for this: a possible optimism bias, the inherent uncertainty in any forecast, limited data and a poor choice of modelling tools. Therefore any better approach must acknowledge these constraints from the outset and be adapted to deal with revenue risk. This book addresses these issues on the basis of 20 years of international experience producing Traffic and Revenue projections for a range of transport concessions: Toll Roads, Managed Lanes, LRT, BRT, Metro and Rail projects with involvement of the private sector. It includes an additional chapter on Congestion Charging. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MJ5YVAO/ http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00MJ5YVAO/ http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00MJ5YVAO/ |

Book by Hilaire Belloc on the Crusades. Just 99 Cents Right Now.
I am posting this book because 1) it's cheap, 2) it's highly rated, 3) it's substantial (269 pages), and 4) it's on a controversial subject (think: interesting). I am not posting it because I necessarily agree with the position(s) that the author takes on the Crusades or any other subject.
The Crusades: The World's Debate. By Hilaire Belloc. Rated 4.1, but from only 7 reviews, at Amazon at the present moment; rated 4.12, from 75 ratings, at GoodReads. Print list price $12.95; digital list price N/A; Kindle price now $0.99. Cavalier Books, publisher. 269 pages. http://www.amazon.com/The-Crusades-W...3QDK9MYX3PN1NM. Book Description Hilaire Belloc, one of the most prolific Catholic authors of his time, gives a common sense explanation of why the Crusades were necessary, and why they ultimately failed. Belloc argues that the personal, and strategic, failings of the First Crusade’s leaders led to the establishment of a state that could not be sustained, and that the absence of such a state left Europe vulnerable to Muslim aggression for centuries afterward. Writing after the fall of the Ottoman Empire, shortly before World War II, Belloc believed that the tide had turned, and that the West had finally gained the advantage over its mortal foe. However, he also includes a prophetic warning to Western civilization about the eventual resurgence of Islam and its enduring desire to destroy Christendom. Endeavour reprints
Jennie: The Mother of Winston Churchill by Anita Leslie In this book, with the skill of an experienced biographer, an Irish sense of humour and a measure of intuition, Anita Leslie has produced a vivid and convincing portrait of Jennie, Lady Randolph, Winston Churchill's mother. From his father, Winston Churchill surely inherited the gift of oratory. But from his mother he drew greater gifts of inestimable value to the nation he led in the dark days of 1940-1. She gave him her ache for action, her formidable stamina, her courage and, above all, the will to stand fast in adversity and to endure whatever fate threw at her. Jennie was an extraordinary beauty whose zest, courage, intelligence and conversational ease made her, in her own right, one of the international figures of her day. Anita Leslie (1914-85) was Winston Churchill's first cousin, once removed. She published an array of fiction and non-fiction, and brought out a memoir, A Story Half Told, in 1983. As well as writing the biography of Churchill's mother, she also wrote one of her cousin Randolf, {Randolph} Churchill's son. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WMWAST2/ http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00WMWAST2/ http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00WMWAST2/ |

The Great Rogue: A Biography of Captain John Smith by Noel Gerson
Captain John Smith was one of the truly great English explorers, and a prolific author who made the New World popular. But he was also his own worst enemy. An officer at 22 after the battle of Amiens in 1597, he was confident, brash and ready to explore the world and after a few more battles through Europe, he returned to London with a reputation. Almost single-handedly, he was responsible for the success of the Jamestown colony in Virginia. His discoveries in New England led directly to the voyages of the Pilgrims and the Puritans. For the leader of the colony, Powhatan, John Smith was the only one he can trust, at first... Captain John Smith is most famous for being saved by Powhatan's daughter, the Indian princess Pocahontas, a beautiful and exotic tale that has been told over and over... But Pocahontas' story was invented by Smith for his own glorification - as were other vivid tales of his life and travels. Noel Bertram Gerson (1913-1988) was a prolific American author, who wrote 325 books under his own name and under several pseudonyms. He channeled his own wartime experience in military intelligence into many of his novels, as well as writing widely about American history. His titles include `Liner', `Daughter of Earth and Water: A Biography of Mary Shelley', `The Conqueror's Wife' and `I'll Storm Hell: A Novel of Mad Anthony Wayne'. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WZ908UQ/ http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00WZ908UQ/ http://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00WZ908UQ/ |
