Well...

I've said that I don't care for software updates such as Word Wise, and that's true. I've also said that I don't "need" the touch pager buttons or the 300 DPI screen, or a (better) front-light than the one on my KPW1.

However, if this Kindle would have cost €129, I would have probably bought it for the better screen and to see if the pager buttons would add anything useful for me, after all. Maybe I still will, but at €189, the Kobo H2O is a very serious competitor to take a look at.

Have I said anywhere that I expected the same price? I just said that the price is out of my range. No need to add words to what I write. I also think that, now that two of Amazon's main competitors are either gone (Sony) or moribund (B&N), that Kindle prices will no longer be going down at introduction. Though I do expect the normal ("it's been out for a while") drop in the Voyage's price at some point.

You can say what you want -- doesn't make you right. There are a lot of desirable products "out of my price range." Acknowledging that simple fact is not "complaining." Actually, the Kindle I use the most, the Kindle Basic (2012), was the cheapest Kindle ever. So, no, I don't have to buy all those extra features at the highest price to get my buttons.

And BTW, I don't think anyone would ever complain that the "price is not enough." Would you?

Yeah, but what you're failing to factor in (if you're a typical Kindle user) is how much profit your heavy usage generates for Amazon in book sales. So, for heavy users who buy mostly from the Kindle store, Amazon could actually give the Voyage away and still make money. That's why Kindle prices dropped so much from the original model prices -- that and the technology became much cheaper over the years.

My current problem is that I *did* go ahead and order the Voyage. My basic K4 has been hanging lately, and I like the buttons on that model.

The problem is that I'm accustomed to only waiting 2 days for whichever Cool Toy I have ordered. My Cool Toy fix that I'm salivating for is so far delayed that I'm browsing for something ELSE to buy just so that something Cool will arrive in 2 days. I think I'm addicted to shopping.....

Buy some books exclusively for the Voyage. Be selective and take your time choosing which books to enjoy on your new kindle.
Not sure how long this will last… but it's something.

Yes, some do get charged tax from Amazon. I didn't think anyone got charged tax in the US for ordering from Kobo's website.

I could never understand why they didn't just use nice high resolution photos.

The various devices should be able to figure out how to display a higher resolution photo rather than defaulting to worthless low resolution photos. I had to return books because the photos were so awful.

I made up a couple of books for my own use and always used the largest photos I could, and they never failed to display on my Kindle Keyboard. I'm not sure what the difference is in the case where a previous poster here said large photos won't display on Kindle devices. Maybe they were way bigger than the large photos I was using. Still, no reason to use poor quality. Fix the eReader software instead!

Publishers and developers really need to fix this.
It's not a problem with the software on the Kindle. It's a problem with the publishers using low resolution images. And as for maps, sometimes they need to rotate the map as the screen isn't wide enough so it needs to be rotated to be in landscape.

Readers cannot decide to display higher resolution images if they do not exist in the eBook. The best you can do is stretch the image to make it larger on screen. That doesn't always work as doing so makes the image fuzzy.

What I do sometimes is to try to find a larger map and use that it put in the eBook. Can't always do that, but sometimes it works.

Kobo did very well (IMHO) getting their readers in independent book stores. As I saw on my last cruise, more Kobo (by an easily noticeable amount) were in use then any other brand eInk Reader combined (from what I saw).

Sony is in no way pretty much done. Sony is determinately done since they have stopped making Readers and closed their eBook store.

B&N needs to redo their nook interface from the ground up and they need to update the hardware and get rid of the walled garden (the partitioned memory).

As far as the US goes, it's mostly between Amazon & Kobo.

I think the Nook interface is probably the least of B&N's problems. Personally I like the interface, but that's the eReader I started with so that's probably why.

Add another K4 Basic to your collection. It appears Staples (at least) still has them in stock.
