Pinholes in light guide
This is a common problem with frontlit eReaders. My Kindle PW1 and Kobo Aura HD both had pinholes near the edges of their displays. My brand new KPW2 has one more annoyingly towards the center-left of its display. You will learn how to tune it out of your vision after awhile.
I am a little disappointed in the display quality of this device. I was expecting at least a marginal improvement, but aside from reduced shadowing at the bottom, the text on the KPW2 might actually look a tiny bit blurrier than on my KPW1. The background color does look slightly whiter, but don't expect a major upgrade hardware-wise. The new software features and faster processing speed are nice, but I'm getting a few glitches during regular use. I also don't like that the Time to Read feature is only visible when you tap for the menu now. |

Wow! I love how many of you took the test! I scored a 4 on an uncalibrated Win 8 tablet screen.
Sirmaru and those of you who didn't see any color blobs on the PW1 last year and the PW2 pictures posted in this thread, any chance you could take it as well? I have a feeling that your numbers would be higher, which is not really a bad thing, just different color "acuity". Last edited by xendula; 10-03-2013 at 08:27 PM. |

So, a question for those of you who have had Kindle Keyboards, have upgraded to the PW1 and are seeing issues on the PW2:
If you were me (with a K3) and knowing everything you know now, would you upgrade? I am happy with the m-Edge light on my kindle keyboard, but getting antsy for an upgrade. Was thinking maybe the PW2 is the time to do it. Thanks for your opinions. |

If I had a PW1 and I was happy with it, I would wait a little maybe. I waited a long time before upgrading from the K3 to the PW and I was thrilled! I wondered why I had waited so long. And then when I went back to the K3 while waiting for my PW to come in...well...it was a step back in time. Way back. I had to squint to read. I kept punching the screen to turn a page. Punching the screen to define a word. Duh. So, I'm a happy PW2 user now. I do miss the K3 battery life though. That's the only drawback. Just so you know. I have not been able to verify any defect reported here as material to me on my own PW 2013. However, we are all different. If you are dissatisfied, you can return the device for a full refund. |

I posted earlier that mine had one pinhole. I decided to go to a different Best Buy store and buy another one. I didn't want to exchange the old one in case the new one was worse. I'd rather deal with the hassle of having to go back again to return one.
The good news - the new one has even better lighting (fewer shadows and no light leakage on the edge). The other PW2 had 1/4 inch leakage, but I didn't mind since it was still much improved from my PW1! The bad news - the new one has 3 pinholes! 2 in the lower left and 1 lower center-right. On the other hand, they are less obvious than the PW2 that has 1 pinhole. They don't bother me until a higher light setting than the other PW2. I'll try them out for awhile. I think I'll end up keeping the one with 3 pinholes. I'm ok with some variation in the product. I just find pinholes especially annoying since they glow and can impede the text. I do recommend to try the PW2 if you are apprehensive. I still consider it a huge improvement over my PW1! |

I've been playing with my brand new KPW2 this evening--received it earlier today. And so far, I'm very impressed--and feel very lucky. My screen looks almost perfect to me. No pinholes--at least none that I've seen. And the color is very even--just some very very minor shadowing at the bottom when I'm reading in a darkened room. So minor that I don't really notice it at all unless I really look for it.
Coming from a Sony 650--I'm going to miss the page turn buttons. On the Sony, I could hold the device with one hand really easily resting my thumb on the page forward button and just depress it to turn the page. I'll need to work out a different way to hold the PW. Don't think I'll give up my Sony Readers completely, but the KPW will probably become my go to reader--time will tell ![]() |

![]() I have a Sony PRS-900 in pristine condition if you go into withdrawal. It still even has the original software. I haven't decided what to do with it yet. I wanted one for such a long time and then I found this one and it was - sigh - old hat. Last edited by allowingtoo; 10-03-2013 at 10:27 PM. |
