Like I said, the new Kindle looks cool, just not for me. The Nook has more of what I'm looking for. Perfect example, a lot of people consider pdf support a huge thing and that's cool. To me, pdf support means nothing. See? Just personal choice.
It's funny - just reading this has made me realise how completely I've banished SD card slots from my mind. When I started thinking about getting an eReader in the first place, I really thought not having an SD card was borderline show-stopper for me. Once I settled on the Kindle I honestly forgot all about it.

Now I'm thinking as I look at the Kindle Touch that I'm really pissed off that it doesn't have page turn buttons. I wonder if it's something else I'll forget after owning it.

Not saying the Nook is not superior to the Kindle because it has these features. It's very much an aside.

The type-writer is an example of a thing that's obsolete. Buttons are no more obsolete than laptops are.

Those are the worst people ever! I'm convinced those are the sort of people that would think nothing of poking a person in the face with a forefinger when pointing them out, if it weren't for society frowning on such behaviour.

Of course, when they do leave that smudge on my screen, I have to be polite and control myself and wait until they're gone before I wipe it off; because if I do it immediately in their presence, they'll get all defensive and look at me like I'm the one with the problem

I don't care about that. Smudges on my screen annoy me immensely. So I wipe it way with a glasses cloth as soon as they make a mark.

Because the truth is that even 1GB holds a bucket load of ebooks, let alone 2GB, 4GB etc that these things have. Still some people seem to like to load their entire library of books up on a SD and just be able to pop it out whenever. I think it's more a shame for the Fire which you may wish to load some larger, more space hungry files onto - movies, colour/graphic novels, magazines, audio etc. Not personally sold on everything in the cloud, especially when I don't have an unlimited download limit, or would want to use it out and about (and 3G which this (the Fire) doesn't even have isn't the best for rich media, let alone the data limits most people have).

That's one of the reasons I didn't get a Kindle when I bought a reader 2 years ago. But I've never come anywhere near filling the 2gb SD card I have so I'm no longer concerned about it. I don't need to store ALL my books on my reader.

And having an sd card was one of my concerns when buying the Xoom but it's a true pain-in-the-ass to use because of the way the linux connectivity works via USB and the physical plugging and unplugging is a pain as well due to the design.

What's the issue with connectivity? Never used Android, I'm curious. Does the USB card not simply appear as a part of the file system?

The issue I have which doesn't bother may, is that the internal memory as well as the sdcard mounts as a "Device" on my win-7 machine, not as an "drive" so things like my Beyond Compare application (diff) won't work properly.

also one much mount/unmount the SDCard in order to have it recognize new files.

Oh, and it's not a 'generic' Android issue, because my DroidX acts differently e.g. the sd Card on it actually mounts as a drive and I can copy, compare, etc. at will.

Hmmm a new thread or not????
I am in Australia, and would like to purchase a Touch and a Fire as Christmas presents for family members. They may be late presents admittedly depending on how soon I order, and shipping dates.
As we use a 240V system and US I think is 110V, does this matter, or is the only way to charge them both thru a USB port? I presume you can use a normal power point which takes a USB connection.
I have a friend in the USA who I hope will order them for me. Is there anything else I should be wary of if I go ahead with this order. e.g. setting up amazon account or somesuch?

Do bear in mind that the "Fire" is primarily a device for consumption of Amazon video content, and that this will not be available to you in Australia. You should consider what your use for the device is going to be in the absence of the available of such content. Its non-expandable 8GB storage makes it problematic for use as a general-purpose tablet. You will not have access to the Amazon App Store, either.

You can only get away with not paying sales tax when you order from certain stores online. If the internet store has a brick and mortar store in your state it has to charge sales tax.

I am sure that Amazon knew what it was doing with it's release date. BN is in a tough spot right now. It has to find a way to match the price of a well established competitor that has a larger overall media empire and a pre-built cloud based system to tap into. Not only will BN have to find a way to bring the price down but it will have to find a way to increase its media outlets and its advertising.

Online is very different then in physical stores. Kindles seem to have taken off in the international markets where you can walk into a brick and mortar store and buy one or play with one. The Kobo is going to need to find a new brick and mortar store in Australia to sell it.
