X-link to the DRM-free thread for some programming-related Humble Bundle offers:

Humble Book Bundle Unreal Engine & Unity 5 presented by Packt contains DIY computer books for the titular game development software, as well as a video course and a free 30-day subscription to their Mapt service which apparently provides online reading access to their entire library.

Also, two of the Humble game bundles are offering sampler freebies with source code and concept art sketches, etc., for other games which you may be interested in looking at.

On this day in 1411, Henry was chillin' with some KFC and catching up on back episodes of Game of Thrones while sippin' the finest corn mash. In commemoration of this momentous occasion, Amazon.com has Ian Mortimer's Henry V: The Warrior King of 1415 for $2.99

Quote:
What are time and space made of? Where does matter come from? And what exactly is reality? Scientist Carlo Rovelli has spent his life exploring these questions and pushing the boundaries of what we know. Here he explains how our image of the world has changed throughout centuries. From Aristotle to Albert Einstein, Michael Faraday to the Higgs boson, he takes us on a wondrous journey to show us that beyond our ever-changing idea of reality is a whole new world that has yet to be discovered.

Cleopatra by Ernle Bradford is free right now at Kindle US. I've not read this title, but have read The Great Siege: Malta 1565, Thermopylae: The Battle for the West, and Gibraltar: The History of a Fortress, all by this author, and have enjoyed them all.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Cleopatra-Ern...dp/B017XO5RV2/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Cleopatra, the last Ptolemaic Queen, passed into legend, and history traduced and maligned her as an infamous woman, given to sexual excess and capable of every perfidy.

The truth was quite different.

She was a woman of infinite courage and political resource. From the age of eighteen until her death she had fought to free her country from the iron dominance of Rome and to secure its inheritance for the son of her first lover Julius Caesar. It was right that she should be buried in Alexandria, for in her spirit and in her ambition she was worthy of Alexander himself.

The subject of biography and tragedy, Queen Cleopatra remains a subject to which historians are attracted two thousand years after her glorious but doomed life.

Had Julius Caesar not been murdered, Cleopatra might well have become the empress of Rome and all the Mediterranean world, living to see it ruled by a Julian-Ptolemaic dynasty.

The ‘Queen of the Nile’ was seventeen when she took to the throne of Egypt in 51BC. This ambitious young woman, initially married to her younger brother and co-ruler Ptolemy XIII, watched the savage struggle between Caesar and Pompey, hoping that Rome would destroy itself in the process.

A politician as well a monarch, Cleopatra was determined to save Egypt from being overcome by Rome in its most Golden Age. Her political intentions were clear in her amorous conquests of both Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. The latter was defeated at the Battle of Actium in 31BC.

Ernle Bradford uses ancient sources to piece together the life of the Queen, and reflects on portraits of her throughout history.

Cleopatra’ is a thorough biography of one of the most fascinating figures in history.

Roger Casement by Brian Inglis

Brian Inglis writes in considerable depth the biography of a patriot who lived and died in England.

Inglis is giving Roger Casement the attention he deserves, as he displays how he achieved an international reputation three times, sacrificing his life on the third.
Casement was born in Dublin and bought up a Protestant, and although he caused a sensation in England through his reports that depicted the cruelty of both the Peruvian Amazon Company and the Congo Free State, in 1913 he devoted time to exploring the history of his home country.
A year after the First World War broke out however, Casement made a fatal choice...
He went to Germany and secured a treaty that gave formal recognition to Ireland’s right to independent nationhood.

Brian Inglis is the author of The Story of Ireland, alongside a number of other works on Irish History and current affairs.

Free on Amazon UK -Imperial Warriors: Britain and the Gurkha by Tony Gould

Spoiler:
A history of the legendary Gurkhas.

Gurkhas have been recruited into the British and Indian armies since 1815 - the year the East India Company went to war with Nepal.

Over nearly 200 years these soldiers from the foothills of the Himalayas have become a byword for courage, endurance and loyalty.

In this study, Tony Gould examines the many legends that have grown up around them and puts the story of the expansion and contraction of Britain's Gurkha force into the context of Nepalese history, as well as that of the Indian and British armies.

The reality of this unique relationship is in many ways more remarkable than the myth.

Free on Amazon UK -Trading in Death: Weapons, Warfare and The Modern Arms Race by James Adams
Spoiler:
The ever-evolving race in selling death…

Modern warfare in the twentieth century has advanced in far greater strides than any other century previously. And as the former political consultant for the Sunday Times, James Adams reveals increasingly political.

In this thoroughly researched book, Adams’ details the different areas of warfare advancements in the modern era.

With numerous case studies, across the years, nations and continents, Adams’ delineates a clear timeline of how ‘selling death’ has changed and altered.

From the organisational, training and bomb advancements made in IRA groups as well as the former guerrilla factions and freedom fighters in Afghanistan and Iran.

From illegal arms deals done in secret by the very superpowers that openly condemned them in up-coming third- and second-world countries.

Adams also illustrates individual advancements in use of chemical weapons in Iraq and Iran; research in biological warfare; and Nuclear programs in America, the former Soviet Union and even India, Israel and Pakistan.

It’s made clear by Adams that deception and armament go hand-in-hand – regardless of whether it’s a single extremist or an entire country.

But the conflict of arms is also one of money and business – large portions of a nations’ economy are often built on multi-million dollar deals in international arms sales.

And as Adams shows, corruption isn’t just limited to moral, ethical or legal lines…
