Not quite, but probably close enough. The word used is 'detectable'.
The first five elements of the Drake Equation do exactly what Tom said; give an estimate of the number of intelligent life-forms. However, if all these life-forms do is sit around and write poetry, we'll almost certainly never notice them. The sixth part of the equation is whether or not the life-forms have created detectable technology (radio waves, death stars etc..). The seventh part is how long they have had this technology for - if an alien civilisation 300 light years away only started broadcasting radio last Thursday we're not going to notice for a while. Anyway, sorry to be pedantic, but it is an important distinction. Over to somebody else then. |

Oh, hell. Have I killed this thread?
I'll ask another question (despite my last one going down like a lead balloon!). What almost legendary 'thing' may be on the verge of being discovered on the Switzerland/France border? |

I always come in too late on the ones I know.
Then again, "may" is the operative word here. |

Some kind of tourist attraction? London Bridge is now somewhere in Nevada. I doubt that's big enough, but is it a similar scenario?

It's in Regina, Saskatchewan, but I can't remember the name. We rode over it on a bike ride from Nova Scotia to Vancouver Island in the early 80's. I only remember the tourist brochures we picked up saying it was so...

^Okay, that's close enough. Bonus marks for riding over it. The bridge was built during the depression when they built Wascana Lake (yes, we built a lake) and the bridge itself is 256m long, but only goes over about 5m worth of water where there is a damn to hold the water in the lake. We also hand-planted probably 99.8% of the trees in the city. We're crazy. This story is of course all heresay and unverifiable, although it's apparently in the Guiness Book of Records if that counts for anything.
It's the Albert Memorial Bridge in Regina Saskatchewan. A couple of my photos of the bridge. It really is very cool and one of my favourite things in Regina. Spoiler:
On to you Stitchawl for the next question. |

OK! A lot of my geography knowledge comes from the themes of different motorcyle rides we've taken. 'Coast to Coast in Canada,' 'Northernmost point in the East to Southernmost,' 'Ride the Four Corners of the US,' etc. One favorite ride we took was to visit as many Covered Bridges as we could possibly ride in the few weeks we had for the trip.
Question: One 'county' has the most covered bridges in the US, but its State is actually #2 for having the most. Which State has the County that has the most covered bridges? (NOT which State has the most.) And how many covered bridges are in that county? Stitchawl |

Iowa as the state that has the most? This is just based off of the assumption that the reason you think that this might be something people may know is the book and then film The Bridges of Madison County. That being in Iowa. Also birthplace of John Wayne (the real "Duke" not John Wayne Gacy
![]() ETA I meant to say that I thought Iowa was the state with the county (Madison County) having the most covered bridges. Still no idea on the number. My guess for the state with the most would be Pennsylvania. Last edited by Hamlet53; 01-11-2012 at 03:50 PM. Reason: Edit to clarify early morning typing. |

I have no idea what the answer is, but when I think covered bridges I think Vermont.
