It is not surprising that it was wanted in India, nor that it came from New England particularly. It is surprising that it got to India in a usable state.

I'm just re-reading a book called "The Frozen Water Trade" by Gavin Weightman. It is subtitled, "How ice from New England lakes kept the world cool". It's quite an interesting read if you like quirky history.

Yes that is surprising, and interesting. I am surprised that it would not have been cheaper to obtain ice from the Himalayas, or from Russia.

So some questions regarding the United Nations that should not require Google searching, just knowledge of some basic facts about history as well as awareness of recent current events.

When and where was the United Nations first chartered? What country most recently joined the UN and how many member states does the UN now have?

Slightly more difficult bonus question. Name one universally recognized country that is not a member of the UN?

I've probably gotten them all wrong because I guessed and didn't use Google.

The charter year is correct, but none of the other guesses. I also have now Googled what I thought was the answer to my bonus question and discovered that what I thought was true is ten years out of date. So can that bonus question.

Yes, chartered in San Francisco in 1945. I have a memento of sort from that occasion, though I was not yet born. One of my great aunts and her husband were living in SF at the time and were invited to one of the commemorative events around the founding. They came away from that with a specially commissioned ink etching of San Francisco as viewed from Nob Hill in 1945. It fell into my possession when my aunt died and now hangs framed in my home, with the accompanying letter of explanation taped to the back.

for my bonus question, as I knew it for years had not joined even though many UN office were located there. On checking though I found that it did join in 2002.

Have the rules changed here? I was under the impression that the use of Google disqualified us. Anyone can research an answer...

Let's keep Google for 'checking' answers, rather than finding them!
