All I can say is that there are 4 hours before bed and I haven't bought a book or audiobook yet in October.

There’s a lot of ebooks I want, but I haven’t bought any for a couple months. So I’m doing pretty good,

Over five years on, I can say that these were a good buy after all. I'm just finishing up the Amelia Peabody series, and they have been excellent.

So sometimes excellent bargains really are excellent bargains.

But I'm still trying to keep my buying under control. None bought so far this month!

And I realise I missed a great opportunity back in 2014. Let me make up for it now.

I can’t possibly read or listen to all the books I have accumulated. I keep telling myself that I have more than enough for now. And yet, there’s always something new and intriguing that I just must have.

My self talk is "when you've read the books you've already bought, there be more JUST LIKE this one that you are seeing an ad for right now".

Or

"by the time you get around to reading it, there will be more in the series already written, or the series might even be finished".

Such self talk is only marginally helpful to keep my from purchasing

So far this year, I'm slowing down my purchases. For September, I purchased 66 ebooks with another 7 so far in October though 4 of those were from the Baen Monthly bundle and one won't arrive until March, 2020 (The Pursuit of the Pankera by RAH). At this time, I don't have a TBR pile and many of my purchases are also helping to whittle down my pbook collection.

Dang it. These $1 “entire box sets” keep getting me. I’ll never get around to reading them.

I haven't posted here in a while. Hubris got me, I think; after a couple of years where I thought I had this licked, I ran off the rails in January and February this year, for no particular reason. Because the books were there, really. Thus my stats were spoiled for the year no matter what.

I did pull myself together for the next seven months, with one month with no purchases, four with two, and two with four. Entirely acceptable. I'm posting now because October saw me backslide, with eight books. At least I don't regret any of them (yet), unlike some of my early-year ones.

It could be worse (it could almost always be worse). My TBR is down, albeit only slightly, at a net reduction of nine. And my mini-spree was nothing like the Kobocalypse days, with a total of 15 books purchased over two months. But I did much better in the last two years. I'd like to wrap up the year at an average of a book a week (this is probably not doable) and under $4 a week (possible, if I can find my hairshirt wherever I discarded itw). Next year shall be better.

I had a good October. 15 books read and only 5 bought. But I'm only down on the year so far by pruning my TBR of some 'will never read' books.

On the plus side, I'm happy with very nearly all my purchases this year.

I haven't purchased anything in the last two months so my yearly total is still 3 books at $6.97 all in. That sounds good but it's tempered by the fact that I still have 16 unread purchases from 2014-2019. I read only 3 books since Sept 1st and they were library books.

I wish I had more time to read <sigh>.

An extremely salutary exercise that justifies counting it as a reduction! You learn a lot from that process, or at least I do, about the real value of bargains and the drawbacks of buying too far into the future.

This post made me consider how, although I've read 45 books from my TBR this year, that means that roughly two-thirds of my reading is from books I haven't bought. Library books, audiobooks, public domain. Yet another reason I shouldn't be purchasing!

I'm lucky in that respect, as I live alone during the work week and I don't watch television; i.e., I have my weeknight evenings to myself to read.

My wife bought me a new Libra H20, which arrived yesterday. I decided to go shopping in my TBR. I set Calibre to a random sort, switched to cover view, and added 30-40 books to the new device that way.

I am getting to some things that I had really wanted to read a while back but simply forgotten. One of them is a MR Library read - The Letters of Jane Austen.
