When the first Kindle came out, I was pretty sure I was going to get it because I had been waiting ages for a reader with dictionary and search capabilities. Rather than order it and return it if I didn't like it, I decided to wait for the first Mobile Readers to get theirs and report back. I ordered it the next day and it was already backordered for a month. Boy did I kick myself. And, yes, it was a jittery month.

I did just the opposite, I might have been the last person to order from the first batch. I returned my K2i today and have to be Kindleless for a month. I went for the WiFi model and actually saved $50 by the exchange (a big fat lie when you consider I am paying import duties twice).

I signed up for the Amazon rewards card which offers a $40 rebate on the first transaction, so I'm basically getting the 3G graphite model for $149.

Brilliant, and using this idea the WiFi version can be had for a cool $99!

Worked for me I like the original K1 cover just fine, never had any problems with it.

Rats. I waited until today to make sure I wanted it. I can't believe it is sold out already! That's pretty high demand.

This is great news. It seems like it's a good eBook Reader and it's cheap. It will go more mainstream which means they will start to fix the price of eBooks. Especially ones which have been out for like years and the paperback is £5 or less but the eBook is £15

My apologies, I should have said Sony PRS-505. I had no idea the other Sonys shipped without covers, though. That's sort of a bummer, I really like the default cover the 505 shipped with, and I prefer the reader coming with one, rather than having to fork over so much money on top of the reader just to have ANY protection.

ETA: but I do see the point about paying less and choosing your own cover.

3 Specific questions before I pull the trigger

I think I am going to pull the trigger on my first e-book reader, the Kindle 3 looks great! I just read through this whole thread, all 34 pages

I have 3 questions. I am interested in the WiFi version and I will be passing through the USA in September/October.

* I have a USA Amazon account and a USA address (in fact, I already have a couple of Kindle books). Can I purchase content abroad in various countries, specifically non-European developing countries like Colombia (where I am writing this message from) and the Philippines as I spend a good deal of time in both places.

* Is the firmware user upgradeable via an Amazon update? I am a techie so it is not a problem if it is non-trivial to do. I am not looking to jailbreak my Kindle, just want to make sure that Amazon can fix bugs that might show up in the first release.

* Since I spend most of my time traveling abroad, I am wondering if the screen is resistant to scratches, I don't plan to buy a cover and instead treat it more like a disposable device. For instance, my Ipod Touch screen is virtually indestructible and I don't have to worry about it.

Thanks very much! Travis

As long as you have an Internet connection you shouldn't experience any problems with downloading books. But as soon as you are outside the US there are restrictions on which books you can obtain due to publishing licenses.
Amazon updates its firmware on a fairly regular basis, when you turn on WiFi Whispernet will update in the background.

Thanks for your reply. Apple and the Itunes store actually seem to use the country of your credit card and its address, not your physical location, to determine these sorts of licensing issues (this is what I was hoping Amazon does). Although if you read the actual Apple agreement, it says that you can't download content from the App store outside of your home country (yes I read it twice to confirm this -- then I emailed friends in other countries that use a USA credit card and they said they had had no problems).

I thought they used the country on your account to establish your point of purchase. I never had problems when I was out of the country even before International service started or in a country where Kindle was not supported. Maybe that's changed recently but I thought that was still the case.

I believe the your IP will be checked as you log on to Amazon.
