Is it appropriate to mention this here?
![]() Flash Fiction Friday had a different prompt this week, about "lost" children. And for every entry in this prompt, the moderators are making a donation to two associations that rescue/help abused children. I wrote a Flash piece for this, but must say it was difficult to write. |

Just posted this on my blog, re: the Parker novels by Richard Stark/Donald Westlake:
One of the niftiest arts blogs around is Terry Teachout's About Last Night. It's always a source of good recommendations and commentary on books, movies, music and theater. The current post on that blog, "Top of the Barrel," includes the following little tidbit of news regarding the University of Chicago Press reissues of the Donald Westlake/Richard Stark Parker novels: "If you haven’t yet jumped on the Stark/Parker bandwagon, I have good news, which is that the University of Chicago Press is giving away free copies of the e-book version of The Score, the fifth novel in the Parker series, throughout the month of September. You can download your copy by going to the U of C Parker page, and you can also order it directly from Amazon and Barnes & Noble. (If the $0 price hasn’t shown up yet on these sites, come back later today or tomorrow.)" Mr. Teachout's post provides links to the U of Chicago's page where The Score can be downloaded. The $0 price has shown up at Amazon. The good news doesn't stop there -- ebooks of three early novels in the series, The Hunter, The Man with the Getaway Face, and The Mourner, are currently priced at just $2.66 each at Amazon. If you love lean, mean crime fiction and haven't discovered this series yet, treat yourself to these. You won't be disappointed. The two most recent releases, Flashfire and Firebreak, are also available -- Mr. Teachout provided an introduction to these titles, and if you're one of those people who never bothers with the intro, make an exception this time. And if you're not already following Terry Teachout's blog and articles in Commentary and the Wall Street Journal, check them out -- you won't be disappointed there either. |

I've just posted a new review at my Papyrus - indie review site. This time I've reviewed David H. Burton's The Second Coming.
A great read - waiting for the second in the series. Review here. |

Great interview with Frida Fantastic. Talking about how she got started reviewing and with a whole bunch of tips for those looking to get reviewed. Just in case any of you don't know who Frida is (is that possible?); well, head on over and you'll find out - CLUE - If you write Speculative Fiction, Sci-Fi or the like you'll be happy.

Version 2 Klippings Kollector
MODERATOR NOTICE: THIS PRODUCT IS NOT FREE.
____________________________ Some months ago I posted info about the Klippings Kollector. I’m the one who created the first prototype for my personal use. Version 2 has just been released and is so much more powerful. Along with adding searching and printing over one, multiple, or all books, master folders to arrange your books (Novels, History, etc) however you please, we have also added creating a book. Creating a book (manual book) is phenomenal. You may drag highlights from any other book into it, e.g., create a compilation of quotes. You may copy and paste from any etext into it. Anything on the web is available to be entered into Klippings Kollector. The location number may be changed to rearrange whatever you paste or type into your highlights. For another example, I own the C-Pen. I’m in the process of transferring all of my highlights from the past into Klippings Kollector right now. The C-Pen creates a text file of my highlights. Since the Kindle can read a text file and assign location numbers to it, I simply open my text file, quickly highlight my entries, and then import them! Because I can do searches across books, I’m able to study common ideas from the same author or books of the same genre. For instance, I have finished Animal Farm and 1984 by Orwell. I can compare common ideas that I have tagged. Another exciting feature is KlipShare. It enables a user to share any of his books with anyone else. I export my notes and analysis on 1984. You happen to be reading it and want to take a look at my book. When you import my KlipShare, my 1984 is kept distinct from yours showing my name or handle so you know it’s mine. Furthermore, you can make a manual book and then combine entries from your book and my KlipShare. Oh yes, in opposition to Version 1, Version 2 does have a trial version. It is not time limited but book limited. You will be able to test this software without cost. All the videos have been recreated since the interface is so different. Of course I’m excited about this. Though dementia is creeping into my life (I’m soon to be 66), my ability to remember what I’ve read is greater now than in my best days in college (I graduated summa cum laude.) I can finally do something with my highlights, along with any notes or analysis that I make. The Kindle along with Klippings Kollector make a complete team for reading and understanding. Netflix for Books (recommendations, not unlimited reading plans)
I thought this was pretty cool:
http://books.usatoday.com/bookbuzz/p...ystem/547455/1 I tried it out with my own goodreads account (be my friend) and I found some pretty interesting recommendations. I've been looking for something like this for a while. |

I beta tested the system. It's fine but it only works well if you are invested in the system. Meaning that 20 books will get you crap recs. You need to have a lot more. I have over 398 ratings and over 100 reviews and I still get crap recs.

I think a large part of this system relies on putting books in shelves to indicate what you think it is (Historic fiction, hard sci-fi, sci-fi) etc.
Having lots of books shelved as sci-fi will get more general sci-fi recommendations instead of hard sci-fi. At least that's how I understand their explanation. I only shelve my books as Own, To-read, Read, Wishlist, so I'm not sure how well it will do. |
