Or else you could look for Romance outside genre fiction. My two favourite romantic novels are "Maurice" by E. M. Forster and "Possession" by A. S. Byatt. Both by writers who master the craft.

I haven't read much in the way of romance, but I concur with your opinion of Maurice.

Every Man Dies Alone or Alone in Berlin (German: Jeder stirbt für sich allein) is a 1947 novel by German author Hans Fallada. It is based on the true story of a working class husband and wife, Otto and Elise Hampel, who committed acts of civil disobedience in Berlin during WWII before being caught, tried by Judge Roland Freisler, and executed in Plötzensee Prison. Fallada's book was one of the first anti-Nazi novels to be published by a German after WWII. Primo Levi said it is "the greatest book ever written about German resistance to the Nazis."[1]

Yes, a good conclusion. I'm a little unsure about one of the characters reactions to the resolution, but on the whole, it's very good. There's a small element in the ending that I didn't notice being mentioned as possible early in the book, which was a little annoying in retrospect.

Now for some Mil SF. The Sharp End by David Drake. From 1993.

So far it's the expected action, although the first bit is just setting up the immediate background of the characters.

My problem is I have no idea what to read next. I'm thinking of the first Sookie Stackhouse book or maybe the latest Star Trek book.

I believe Alone in Berlin is the UK title of Every Man Dies Alone. There's a US Kindle version, but I doubt that's what you want. Even the German original (Jeder stirbt für sich alleine) is hard to find as ebook due to rights issues. In the end I had to get a paper version.

I'm reading City of Dragons by Kelli Stanley -- 1940s crime noir set in San Francisco with a female private detective. It's good, with great period details, though the story's pace is a little slow. Still, it's right down my alley.

Just downloaded The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest which I will read as soon as I finish 61 Hours by Lee Child which, so far, is a great read

Just finished Looking for Jake - short stories by China Mieville. An interesting selection, mostly good with side orders of weird, macabre and disturbing thrown in for good measure. For something lighter finally got round to reading Dead(ish) by our own Nomesque - brilliantly twisted and funny. And next up will probably be The City and the City - back to China Mieville again.

About halfway through The Name of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. I am really enjoying this book. Many times I get so caught up in it at night I miss my bedtime & have a hard time getting up with my son in the morning.
