I'm reading THE LAST CHILD by John Hart. I just started and it feels a little slow. I loved his last two books, so I'll stay with this one and see how it goes. (It did win the Edgar this year for best novel.)

In honor of Martin Gardner who died on Saturday, I've started reading one of the few of his books available in Kindle ebook format, Jinn from Hyperspace: And Other Scribblings--Both Serious and Whimsical

I hadn't either. That's a great loss for everyone who loves science as well as a great loss for the skeptical community. He was one of the greats. He wrote some great columns for Scientific American.

It appears to be his second from the last book, published in 2007. I'm enjoying the heck out of it. Now I'm going to have to dig into archives (read boxes full of paper books) to finds some the earlier stuff I have of his.

Every book in the Flashman series is a wee gem, Ben. And the historical notes at the end of each novel are superb. I wonder if they came across in the audio version. Cheers. Neil

I thought it was time to experience something from the romance genre. 'Silk' is an easy read set around 1930 and based in the fabric industry.
Disappointingly the heroine, Amber, is a shallow character with (so far) few interesting characteristics, although this does give rise to moments of unintentional humour:
"...Amber felt as though she was walking on air, hugging to herself the knowledge that no matter what happened to her in her life, no one would ever be able to take from her the pleasure of buying her Chanel bag."

The blurb says Penny Jordan is a mentor to new writers; Penny Jordan also writes sentences like:
"Aix-en-Provence, even though seen merely from the window of their wagon-lits, had literally seized her heart..."
A geographical region has apparently ruptured our heroine's sternum, and taken hold of one of her major organs!! If only.

It's quite an enjoyable read; but mainly for the wrong reasons. I won't read any more of Jordan's books, but I'm sure I'll find better Romance novels to further my education.
I think you shouldn't expect much of the writing in genre Romance. One that you might enjoy better, because it's funnier - intentionally - is "Undead and Unwed" by Maryjanice Davidson. The writing as such is still not anything to, well, write home about, though.

Or else you could look for Romance outside genre fiction. My two favourite romantic novels are "Maurice" by E. M. Forster and "Possession" by A. S. Byatt. Both by writers who master the craft.

I agree. When I'm in the mood for romance, I have to be happy when the writing doesn't make me squirm Silk is not too bad (i.e. I managed to finish it), but I agree with Ea that MJ Davidson's writing is much better. Humor makes a big difference for me.

As far as romance is concerned, in my book nobody beats Jane Austen.

In a very different style but also romance, I read Fortune's Rocks by Anita Shreve some years ago, and loved it.

Of course, there's nothing erotic in either of those. Just imagine Jane Austen writing erotica

Florence and Ea for the Romance pointers.

I'm reading 'Silk' because I was curious to know what a 'normal' romantic novel is like - I wasn't expecting it to be great lit; any more than I'd expect a standard SF or crime novel to be great lit, so I'm not grumbling.
I did try to read 'Possession' once, but I hated it - Byatt is one author I just don't get.
Austen, Brontes, Hardy et al are fantastic - I like a lot of the classic Victorian romances (Margaret Oliphant is a personal fave ).

Anyone know if Hans Fallada's *Alone in Berlin* is on sale in ebook form anywhere? All I can find are treebooks and torrents (won't go there). Cheers. Neil

No-one is perfect I know Byatt is not to everybody's taste.

Good writing doesn't seem to be the reason why people read it (genre Romance). I tend to think of it as light entertainment, equivalent to TV. I actually started reading it because I'd gotten into reading slash fan-fiction (which is in itself a type of Romance).
