Soo, I returned my Kindle 2i today in anticipation of delivery of K3. It has been two hours and I'm beginning jonesing, where is my friendly neighborhood book peddler when I need him? No more free samples. No 60 second downloads and three or for agonizing weeks ahead.

Both versions of the K3 are sold out. There is a notice saying that the expected shipping date for the second batch of K3's will be September 4th.

Since Sept 4th is a Saturday and it's also Labor Day Weekend, I would be willing to bet that orders don't start shipping until Sept 7th which is the next business day for UPS etc.

I'm a little disappointed that the Kindle 3 does not ship with a cover. I thought Kindle 1 did, and the Sony did as well. having to pay an extra 40-60$ for a cover kind of makes the price a lot less attractive.

A lot of readers are cover optional now.

The first batch will ship on Aug 27 and the second batch on Sept 4. That is a quick second shipping for items that they sold out.

I'm not sure with the latest deals that are going on, but the Sony 300 and 600 originally sold without a cover. The 900 was the only one of their current models to be sold with a cover. If they are now selling the 300 and 600 with covers and marked way down that might be a sign of liquidation to make room for a new batch of readers this fall. BTW, All but one reader I've bought came without covers, and that includes Sonys, Kindles, and Aluratek.

The K1 shipped with a cover. I replaced it about two weeks after getting it, it was awful. I did see someone reading on a K1 with the original cover a month ago so I guess it worked for some folks.

ETA: I think Amazon had a second shipment ordered that was probably going to go to Target stores (based on Ajaxs post) in early September. The new ship date might be for those Kindles with Target getting pushed back.

Rats. I waited until today to make sure I wanted it. I can't believe it is sold out already! That's pretty high demand.

The K1 came with a cover, but it was also $400. I'd rather pay less and pick my own cover. I ended up buying an after market cover anyway.

Glad I've got my K2 and hasn't hopped on the bandwagon for the K3 yet. I would get the jitters waiting for the K3 to ship.

My Sony 300 didn't come with a cover - another £20 ......

I did buy a cover for my Kindle (MCover) but that was more for protecting it in my bag - it isn't a 'book' type cover.
