It's definitely not a SO device, so this is really weird.
I had no ads initially and they only appeared after installing the firmware, jailbreaking and hotfixing. Was the 5.10.0.2 FW from the first post a SO firmware? I've logged on to my Amazon account and there's no mention of removing special offers from my device. |

Just install and run once booklet-KUAL.

I had that happen to me onetime, I had a Kindle Paperwhite 3rd Generation, that was confirmed to have no special offers, I installed the factory firmware, and jailbroke it, and I had special offers. I had to call Amazon, and they removed them.

Hmm, maybe I'll give them a call. How do they react to it being jailbroken? I thought about resetting it, reinstalling the downloaded factory firmware and trying again, but if Amazon can change it on their end that would be grand.
I've scoured the Amazon site but there's nothing to indicate either of my Kindle's are special offers versions. Thanks for your assistance and sorry for my.lack of knowlefge. |

Ok, so it turns out it was all due to my naivety. Just to be certain I reset and re-jailbroke the device several times, connecting to my account at different times. Each time the device connected to the Amazon servers, the device installed the Japanese banner ad and screensaver.
TL;DR below - make sure what you're buying is a local product! I purchased the device for an excellent price from what I believed was an Australian website. After speaking with Amazon customer service, it appears the device was originally purchased in Japan. Although the listing made no mention of it being a foreign item, nor being a SO model. Anyway, after some discussion, Amazon Australia was apparently unable to remove the banner ads as it was a .co.jp model. The customer service lady essentially told me I needed to suck it up and swipe the screen because there was no way she could help apart from send feedback to her superiors and there was no ETA on removal. I continued to ask politely if there was anything that could be done and if I would be kept in the loop as I don't want to have to keep swiping - I'd rather send it back, get a refund and buy another without the SO nagging. She sent an email to her .co.jp colleagues and I should receive an email update within 1-2 days. So I did a little Goggle searching and happened upon a reddit thread of someone who had the same banner ad problem. He contacted amazon.co.jp but they apparently couldn't remove the ads. He kept pestering Amazon via chat and eventually customer service at amazon.co.uk (where he lived) was able to remove the ads. So it CAN be done, but it may take some persistence! I just wanted to thank you for trying to help me. I've been a long time reader but never needed to register or post until now. Interestingly, I find my Kindle Touch 6" (low res) screen sharper and higher contrast than my 300dpi Kindle PW4 which is a little disappointing, but the light's going to make reading it in more places much more feasible. Now to get on to working out how to manage collections in Calibre - the sole reason I've jailbroken this device! I'm sure I'll find some other ripper applications to load. Thanks again! |

@NRB73: Glad you got to the bottom of it

Brand new PW4, JB went well, MRPI and KOReader was installed, update blocker directory was created. I thought it is time to update the FW from 5.10.0.2 to 5.11.1.
Reinstalled hotfix just to be on the safe side, then upgraded to 5.11.1 , installed MRPI and KUAL again, also KOReader and registered the device at amazon, first time using its WiFi. Kindle has downloaded an update! ![]() After I answered LATER, some minutes later it did update itself, automatically. ![]() ![]() I checked, the update blocker directory was intact, KUAL, KOReader, etc are working. How could it update anything? |

Hi guys, sorry it's me again. I have a couple of quick questions. I spent a considerable amount of time with Amazon staff the other night and they thought they'd removed the Special Offers, but for some reason they're still there despite the option now being greyed out on their end. Amazon Japan will not remove ads under any circumstances.
After they'd removed the offers I reset the device, applied the jailbreak and hotfix but once again the ads returned after connecting to Amazon servers. I've put an RMA request with the company that sold me the device but they've asked that I make sure the firmware is up to date first. Can I safely apply the 5.11.1 update from Amazon and retain the JB? [from https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custo...HPVAW86CHYHKS] I know once I apply it I can't reset the device as I won't be able to re JB 5.11.1, right? Thanks. |

OK, thanks for the "sum up", so no worries, just the fonts were downloaded and that is normal. I have not seen such font download before.

I think they started doing that sometime in the last couple of years. I'm not certain, but I also think that even if you don't connect to wifi after the firmware update, it will nag you about the fonts every time the kindle is restarted (rebooted). Part of the price of one firmware for all markets.
