There are automated ways to do this, but why bother? Why don't you just make a search for whatever formats you are interested in and save the search?
Are you referring to a search for multiple formats? I wanted a column which would show the format of each book-file on the same line, as I have as many as 3 formats for any individual book, and would like to see all formats at once. After all the program knows the format of each book already - I just want it to show without having to click on anything.

Yes, or for a single format, whatever you need.

That's what I thought you wanted.

You can't do it easily. You can put the current formats into your column, but they will get out of date as soon as they change. There isn't any direct way to show all the formats for multiple books simultaneously. That's what you are asking for.

This would be much more user friendly than clicking on the small purple buttons at the bottom, or above or below the elevator on the scroll bar at the right. And when reading in a chair in front of an HDTV display it is not convenient to have the keyboard on my lap to use the page up or page down keys. That's where the cat sits.

Have I missed it? If not is there any chance it might be added? Also, is there a way to hide the scroll bar? It seems unnecessary and distracting when reading a book. It would be nice to have a show/hide button for it, as there is for the TOC.

BTW, Calibre is really looking impressive! Just installed the latest version over a version I downloaded a long time back and am amazed at the changes. Great work!

Gord
There are 2 Purple arrow buttons. on the tool bar.

Note that you can relocate (drag) this bar, including detached from the viewer.
Calibre won't remember this between uses , but it only takes a sec to do.

Mm-hmm.

Something else I'd like to be able to do, which may or may not be acheivable using Calibre, is break, anthologies and other story collections down to allow of listing them by their individual title and Author data.

Tried that and it is easier to access those buttons at the top rather than the bottom. Actually, I really like eliminating one of the bars by putting them both on the same line. But the real problem still exists. You still have to keep aiming at things to get to the next, or last page and those things are not very big. The mouse almost always drifts off the button before you need to use it again. It distracts one from the story being read. And the story, the book, is what a reader is all about.

Another, perhaps much easier, modification that would allow switching pages without any distraction at all, would be to allow redefinition of the mouse roller function from four lines up and down, as it is, to previous page and next page. Some readers I have used allow redefining the roller action to any specified number of lines up to a full page. It allows you to just read without being distracted by the mechanics. The fewer distractions, the better the reader in my opinion.

Regards,
Gord

you should open a ticket requesting the enhancement, but if I was you, I'd jut put my keyboard next to my lap, and or use a mouse with programmable button and program one of the buttons to be page down

Sorry to bother you all

I discovered that my daughter has about 100,000 (really) ebooks of various formats (does #bookz or #ebooks or mIRC sound familiar). I'm a reader so how do I get calibre to just be my all around ebook reader on my windows PC? I tried file associating but it won't catch the file or even list the ebook viewer as an option. Please excuse the lack of serious searching but I'm on a Panamanian ISP which should explain all. I really just wanna double click on a book and have it open up the calibre ebook viewer.

Calibre's viewer can be accessed only by books kept in calibre. If your daughter has her books in calibre, all you have to do is double click on the number at the far left of the the line the book is on (with the two most recent versions, you can double click anywhere).

If the books aren't in calibre and you don't want to put them all in calibre, you can add one book at a time by clicking on the Add Books icon. Once added to calibre, you can then just double click on the entry as above. Adding a book to calibre makes a copy of the book and leaves the original alone so you don't have to worry about losing the original. If you don't want to keep the original book in calibre after reading it, use the Remove Books icon to delete the book from calibre. Since the original wasn't touched (unless you deliberately deleted it), removing the book from calibre won't cause you to lose the original.

I recommend keeping all the books on calibre even though learning how to put in 1,000 books may be a bit daunting. That way, you won't have to go through all the add and remove nonsense everytine you read a book.

Note that the calibre viewer will not work with books with DRM.

Calibre's ebook-viewer.exe can be associated with EPUB files and its lrfviewer.exe can be associated with LRF files.

If you have the book in the calibre library and try to open it within the calibre application, then calibre will do a quick convert to epub and view the book in its viewer. Even within the calibe app I have calibre setup to use external viewers for most formats. Within the calibre App I only use calibres viewer for epub, fb2, lrf, mobi, pdb, prc, and rb.

This is what I use to view files by association on my PC

Epub - Calibre's ebook viewer
LRF - Calibre's lrf viewer
Lit - Microsoft Reader
Mobi - Kindle for PC
PRC - Kindle for PC
PDF - Adobe Reader
RTF - MS Word or Wordpad
Doc - MS Word
ODT - OpenOffice.org
Txt - Wordpad or Notepad++
AZW - Kindle for PC
TPZ - Kindle for PC

I hope this helps.

Sounds like a glitch - I certainly queue multiple books to convert at the same time. However what could be causing it for you I have no idea.
