Hehe Dadivfor,
Quite a great job you're doing here! I just wanted to ask if you or somebody else would have md5sums for the 4.4.9344 firmware? I just got a glo-hd with it apparently, as seen on `.kobo/version' (third field), so I bought one of those 5 euro card readers that would never give you any image back, but i/o errors... I then tried with adb and my mobile phone, and got a consistent image it seems, whose md5sum is: 990bda1c67be70070e13dba89c37288c Same as the card gives me using `busybox md5sum' on the phone. So I just wanted to check with somebody else even before turning the device on, because it's been given to me in a reset state where it's either wifi or nothing. Regards, |

No, I don't have any checksums for the images. And even if there were, then calculating one from the the SD card would be a waste of time. Even after a factory reset, the device is booted, so changes are being made to the root partition. And the book partition is formatted and will probably end up with a different serial number somewhere. Unless the checksum calculation is based on specific files on the device, any method I know of would produce a different value for each device.
And I have no idea what your concern is. Are you worried about a virus? If so, don't. These devices are running a customised Linux distribution. I very much doubt that anyone is going to be writing a virus that is going to b capable of running on it. The same goes for other forms of malware. A quick search here will show no discussion of anything like this. If you want to make sure you are starting from scratch, I can send you the link to the image and you can restore that. But, personally, I think you are wasting your time and there are much more important things to worry about. Like, what book will I read now? Or, when will Jim Butcher finish the next Dresden Files book? |

That explains why I couldn't find any md5sums or similar for any firmware out there.
My concern is that I had to do it twice. It seems that using the phone to transfer the image via wifi might not be fully reliable either, as the first time the sums dind't match. All I wanted is to have backup (that I'd know is valid) just in case letting the device boot locks while upgrading the firmware or something, as I've read has happened to more than one. So my question then would be, is there any way to check the image I've got is a working one? |

Sorry, you are worrying to much. If the device hangs when updating, you can get a backup image then. Or I can send one now. But, it is far more likely that everything will be OK than that it will brick. And most issues can be sorted out by a factory reset without opening the device. And if you have flaky WiFi, that corrupts the download, then the device won't update. Downloads a zip file, unpacks that and reboots. If the zip file doesn't unpack properly it removes it and doesn't do anything. During the reboot the new kernel and u-boot images are checked before being installed. And the KoboRoot.tgz is also tested. If it isn't good, isn't used. I suggest just turning the device on, doing the setup and then finding a good book to read. |

I, cleaned the original SD card of my Glo HD and installed the image with zero success
![]() The Kobo is frozen on the standby screen, I have already pushed the reset button and the power button on every combination i´ve found on the forums or i could figure out, and every duration per button too (15 seconds, 30 seconds, a minute, and so on) pushed the power button and the lower corners repeatedly. When I push the power button the red led turns on, then turns off and then the screen light turns on, sometimes it stayed on just for some seconds and sometimes it stayed on until I pushed the power button again, I have even used this to deplete the battery and charge it from zero. I´ve disconnected the battery and connected again, and nothing. The screen shows still on standby mode. Could it be that the SD card is broken and it will not work even with partitions restored? The USB image tool showed no problem at all on the SD card. I´m out of ideas so any advice would be well received, thank you!!! |

But, it also sounds like a broken screen. With that description, I would expect some change on the screen if it was booting at all. Are there any defects on the screen that could be cracks? |

Anyway there is a twist. At the begining of last week an attendant of the store were I bought the kobo told they only give 1 year of warrantie on any ereader, so I opened my HD because it is 1 year and a half old and tried to fix it myself, but later the online service of Kobo told me that they give 2 years, so I showed that chat to another attendant that was giving me the 1 year warranty story too, anyway I gave them my device to "check for revision" so maybe I fucked up opening it. And sadly, if warranty applies, they wont fix it, they will give me a new device and there is no Glo HD anymore, they only have the Aura which I believe is not as good as the HD. I have already had a Nook glowlight some years ago and I gave it to my mother, and had the first and the second paperwhite model, the first is my brother's and I sold the second PW to a friend, that three e-readers are working fine by now ![]() |

One good reason to place your location so others have an idea of where in the world you are posting from. |
