I did not yet try it myself, but I guess that it will work. Before using nickel however, do not forget to defang sickel. See this post on how to do it.
If you are not to much in a hurry, you might wait for KSM 8, which is in the making.

Hello to all!
I'm just installing KSM07 at my Aura, but I'm stuck in step 1...
I copied the kbmenupngs folder in root folder and after ejecting my device the tiles shown only in my library and not at my home screen as stand alone tiles...
I'm afraid to go in step 2...
That's is normal?
(I'm running 3.15.0 FW)
Thnx!

Did you try to open each of the images (by selecting it in the library) and then immediately (without paging) return to the home screen?

KSM 08 test version

(Find a more recent test version there.)

I am currently preparing the KSM 08 and would appreciate if some users could try the current test version. I have this version running on a Touch (FW 3.16.10 and later 3.17.0) and on a Glo (FW 3.15.0). I would be interested in the experiences of users with habits different of mine and in how this version does on other models, especially also on Glo HD, since this model suffered a rotation problem at some points in KSM 07.

Please test this version only if you are an experienced KSM user.

How to install:
If KSM is not installed on your Reader
  • If currently there is no version of KSM installed on your device, you need the folder kbmenupngs with its content, and make nickel process the pngs of this folder; cf. "First time installation" in post #1.
  • extract KoboRoot.tgz from KBStartMenu_08prep02.zip and copy it to .kobo of your device
  • eject safely, disconnect and wait until the installation is finished
  • select "tools" > "activate" > "set runmenu settings.msh" > "always"
If KSM is already installed on your Reader
  • extract KoboRoot.tgz from KBStartMenu_08prep02.zip and copy it to .kobo of your device
  • eject safely, disconnect and disable usb
  • select "handle update" > "install update"
  • wait that the device restarts
  • select "tools" > "activate" > "set runmenu settings.msh" > "always"

In addition to your usual usage of the reader, I would like to propose some tests. Most of them are related to the rotation issue some people experienced under KSM 007.

Test: check database integrity

(from KSM home) select "tools" > "nickel diverse.msh" > "db check integrity.sh"

Test: KSM update 1
Spoiler:
  • connect via "usb" > "usb enable.sh" to the pc
  • copy KSM08prep02_update001.zip to .adds/kbmenu_user
  • eject safely, disconnect and disable usb
  • (from KSM home) select "handle KSM updates" > "install updates"
  • wait until you see the information screen and follow the instruction there
This will copy updatetest/nothing_new.txt to .adds/kbmenu_user and updatetestdoc.txt to /adds/kbmenu. You can check whether it worked by
selecting (from KSM home) "scripts" > "browse" > "browse kbmenu user.msh" (there you should see "updatetest"; and if you select "updatetest", you should see "nothing new.txt")
and by
selecting (from KSM home) "scripts" > "browse" > "browse kbmenu.msh" (there you should see "updatetestdoc.txt" )

Test: KSM update 2
Spoiler:
  • connect via "usb" > "usb enable.sh" to the pc
  • copy KSM08prep02_update002.zip to .adds/kbmenu_user
  • eject safely, disconnect and disable usb
  • (from KSM home) select "handle KSM updates" > "install updates"
  • wait until you see the information screen and follow the instruction there
This update will redo the changes done by update 01, you can check the result in the same manner as above.

Test : KSM's power off screen for nickel
Spoiler:
  • (from KSM home) select "tools" > "activate" > "x install ksm poweroff.sh"
  • (from KSM home) select "start nickel"
  • power off (with the power button)
  • when the device has powered off, you shoud see the KSM power off screen
In order to redo this change,
  • (from KSM home) select "tools" > "activate" > "x uninstall ksm poweroff.sh"

As I get reports of bugs, I will try to fix them and upload the new archive. If you share your test results, please mention which archive you did use (KSM08prep02.zip, KSM08prep02a.zip KSM08prep02b.zip, ...). In order to replace a test version by a newer one, copy KoboRoot.tgz to .kobo, then select handle update > install update. After the device has booted, select "tools" > "activate" > "set runmenu settings.msh" > "always"

When my Touch was on FW 3.16.10, I had problems with sickel rebooting the device each time I disconnected if from the pc (of course only when I had connected from within nickel). Now under 3.17.0, I do not have this issue. If you experience any automatic reboots, you might consider disabling sickel. I have included Frostschutz' disablesickel.sh. You can run it by selecting "tools" > "nickel diverse.msh" > "disablesickel.sh".

The main reason for preparing KSM 08 was that all previous KSM versions fostered nickel database errors when loading books with calibre and the kobo plugin while running nickel. So when you are a calibre user you might test this aspect too.

If you are used to associating scripts with pngs with the help of vlasovsoft's .kobo\fmon, this will not work after installing the current test version of KSM. This is on purpose to protect the nickel database. Therefore, please do not reinstall the complete vlasovsoft (pbchess) package. If you want to update it, only copy the vlasovsoft folder to .kobo (or even better to .adds).

Additional information: KSM 08 is split into two parts. One part is located on the system partition (/adds/kbmenu), the other on the user partition ([/mnt/onboard/].adds/kbmenu_user]).

Maybe it is better if you leave .adds/kbmenu (this is your current KSM version, possibly 07) untouched for the moment. We might perhaps use it when replacing the 08 test version by the release version.

My FW is 3.15.0 (H2O) , and I used to have rotations problems before update 001 or 002. I didn't met this problem anymore.
Are you interested with this kind of configuration, or only with Glo or people who stil have rotations problems ?

HI Tshering

thanks for your work, I tried it out, here are my remarks, carried out on GloHD with 3.17.0:
  • Installation worked, I was dropped into a new KSM08. Simple configuration of bigger font on my GloHD worked. Starting koreader and vlasoft worked. Starting into nickel and returning to KSM worked.
  • Database check: Indeed, it was malformed!!! I have seen regular database corruption but didn't know that this is related to the Kobo driver and the KSM - where does KSM come into play here? Anyway, it would be great if that could be fixed, as I have to redo all my library stuff. Is there a way to fix the database?
  • Next I installed the update1 following your directions. What happened is that I got a *rotated* information screen, and after reboot KSM is *gone*, completey gone. Device boots directly into nickel, and exit png just shows up as exit png,
  • After turning off and on again the KSM was back and update installed.
  • Then I installed the second update - same as above: Info screen is rotated, and I cannot click to "Close" button, but it reboots automatically. After the reboot direct into nicke. Turn off the device, turn on the device, KSM is back.
  • Power off screen did worked the first time and showed the KSM power off text. Then booting kicked me directly into nickel and turning it off showed the nickel off screen. Turning in on brough KSM back.

It seems that there are some strange things going on ;-)

Hope that helps

Norbert

The problem was that there were some scripts of KSM (and on some devices also of vlasovsoft) still running from the user partition while nickel was running. Therefore, this partition could not be unmounted properly. I hope this is problem is solved with 08. I guess your db was already malformed before you installed 08. The reason for testing the database check was not related to database problems, but to the fact that Glo HD had a rotation problem there under KSM 07.
You could try to reindex the database. You will certainly lose some information, but maybe it works somehow. If you like you can do it from within KSM: tools > nickel diverse.msh > db not so useful > db reindex.sh. I never had to try this myself, so I do not know how this will turn out.

The rotated information screen is the problem. I am glad we discovered this before publishing the release version.
That nickel booted directly into nickel is not a real problem. I guess you installed according to the "If KSM is not installed on your Reader" instruction. I added the missing last line only now (select "tools" > "activate" > "set runmenu settings.msh" > "always"). Without doing this, the device boots alternating into KSM and nickel.

There are still the runsettings (alternating between booting into KSM and nickel) at work. The KSM off screen can only show if the device was booted into KSM.

Thank you very much for testing. So there is still the rotation problem at the end of the update process. Maybe people will identify further points where the rotation problem occurs. I am sorry for the inconvenience with the alternate booting!

I would be interested in any rotation problems (and othere problems as well) that might occur under the KSM 08 test version. One issue has already been identified (the information screen at the end of the KSM update process on Glo HD).

I uploaded a modified KSM 08 test version. I hope this solves the rotation issue that concerned the update information screen.

I done some test with the previous version (not the above one) and occur some weird issues (H20 FW-3.12.1):
Steps I did
Factory reset (FW 3.7.0) -> sideload update (FW 3.12.1) -> install KSM08pre02 (for active nickel with active_device_john.sh and later use start_nickel_no_fmon.sh to process png. I done it many times before)
but when device boot, ALL menus show blank squares instead of characters, and like I know where to touch gone to USB -> usb_enable_id_like_nickel.sh to connect to PC and when usb was enable all characters appear again like normal.

I try more things.
Thanks for your hard work!

Thank you for telling. I uploaded a new version that I think fixes this. If you do not want to install the new version, please copy a font to .adds\kbmenu_user\fonts as a work around.
