I agree. You really do need another reader to make up for mishaps and such.

Yes, that would be awesome. A couple of my devices, when I opened them, had 4gb cards, although useable storage was still just 2gb. For one of my Minis, I just extended the partition to use the whole 4gb. There's no reason they couldn't sell ereaders with 16gb internal storage.

The Voyage seems like an odd device to me. I don't see the extra functionality between it and the PW2 to justify the extra cost. Maybe it's a status thing, like with Apple and Android.

It does have extra functionality though; an even sharper screen, haptic page turn buttons for people who want them, a light sensor, and several software upgrades.

The thing is, none of the hardware or software upgrades are useful for me personally...

Or a functionality, useful thing, like the buttons and the size, it's smaller and lighter. Or perhaps the better screen.

I certainly haven't bought the Voyager because of status!

Until you have used an eink device with a high resolution display, I advise you to withhold judgment on whether or not its worth the extra money. Once you have tried it, its very hard to go back.

Definitely a status thing for me. I remember back in high school. I was always walking around with a couple of science fiction novels with me. The cheerleaders just couldn't get enough of me.

I agree, there is no reason that they couldn't. But, assuming books get frequently loaded and deleted, a 4, 8, 16, whatever GB card formatted as a single 2GB partition will last longer than a 2GB card since each storage block will be written fewer times.

I don't think so. If you create a 2GB partition on a 4 or 8GB card, the exact same amount of space will be taken up as would be on a 2GB card, starting from the beginning. The rest is just unallocated space, never to be used. It's not the case that creating a 2GB partition on an 8GB card will 'smear' the partition over the entire card.

If this had been the case, you would indeed have been right: such a '2GB' card would last longer because of spreading the write cycles around.

The page-turn buttons would be a huge deal to me. I also like the idea of no indentation for the screen (provided that they've done this well). I guess when looking at features that are "worth it," it depends on the user. That said, I still wouldn't pay $199 for any eReader at this point.

The Voyage appears to be a hit - the lenght of this thread clearly shows that. If Amazon can deliver on the experience reading on it, then I don't even think the price is too high for what is offered. All this complaining about price here only makes it clear (to me at least) that the Voyage is desirable if only it was cheaper. Sure everything would be easier on my and your wallet if it was cheaper.

The threshold to buy is higher with the addition of a new premium priced product line, but then it also make sense. If Amazon would have simply come out with a PW3 with the same price and minor hardware improvements, it would have been another upgrade to skip for me. The Voyage does come looking more like a tablet - and that is great. Buttons that don't wear out? Awesome. Mechanical buttons - to me a step backwards. Flush glass front? Yay! Easier cleaning, no more dirt and hair stuck in bezel, and if it helps to make the front light even better than on my PW1 then more power to it. Might break more? I say it will break less, since it obviously looks fragile. Don't treat it like a book you can toss around, treat it like a tablet.

I want 2 Voyage, and it will be worth savinf the money for. It will not be something everybody else ia going to have - not a one size fits all. Just have to save some money.

K2: my first e-ink device.

K3: improved contrast not worth sticking with large size so soon after K2, but great for anyone that doesn't have one yet or has aging K1 with problems.

KT: no page turn buttons, but great for anyone that wants touch, or willing to put up with it for reduced size.

K4NT: I can retire my flaky PB360.

PW1: no page turn buttons, but great for anyone that wants a light and touch. Too soon after K3 for many, but not everyone got a K3 and some people really wanted a built in light.

PW2: no page turn buttons, too soon after PW1 for some. Improved display controller, higher contrast screen.

KV: Page turn buttons! 300DPI screen. Light not worth it to me to give up page turn buttons, but with them a big plus. I might be in.

Different people put different values on different things for completely legitimate reasons..

Look up "wear leveling" for flash memory. This is done at a very low level. The memory device has no knowledge of its partitioning and after a few writes, the mapping of logical sector number to actual device location becomes spaghetti. That is why "defragmenting" a flash memory device is a bad idea.
