There wasn't an option of choosing a DRM free version and I don't find Apprentice Alf very easy to follow so removing it myself is out.

However, after reading the thread about the 1.9.17 update, it sounds as though some of the 1.9.16 issues have been fixed so I guess I'll simply bite the bullet and download a new version. It's already on my desktop.

Happy ending to my dilemma! The book I recently purchased downloaded to my Kobo Touch first so I simply terminated the wireless connection and wasn't forced to update.
