My favorite line is that with which the book closes:

Thus, from the war of nature, from famine and death, the most exalted object which we are capable of conceiving, namely, the production of the higher animals, directly follows. There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed by the Creator into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone circling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being evolved.
— Chapter XV: Recapitulation and Conclusion
Apparently that ending was re-written numerous times from what I have heard.

I'm on Part Two of The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne, this month's book club book. It was a bit slow in the beginning until I realized that it was written in the late 1800's (before TV) and the long, detailed descriptions were probably used to "paint" a picture for readers of the era.

I've also begun, Future Diary by Sakae Esuno ( a manga pbook) that was an impulse buy when I was purchasing a Mother's Day gift for my mom.
I'm about 1/5 the way through The Voyage of the Minotaur by Wesley Allison (HistoryWes on MR) and anxiously wanting to discover what is going to happen. <I love this one Wes!>

I'm still making it through this month's Book Club book, The Mysterious Island. So far, I've decided this would be a good book to have if stranded on a desert island.

I just made it home from work with a stop at a bookstore on the way home. SOMEBODY (I won't name who ) got me excited about starting F Paul Wilson's Repairman Jack's books again. (Since I already have some in pback, I decided to continue in pback.)

Hand in there, Dreams! In Part III it gets cranking! It makes up in spades for the slow pace of Parts I and II!

Which was OK. Main plot points get resolved, but there's obviously lots of things waiting for sequels. I was a little unhappy with some of the things unexplained so far, and with some characters' actions and motivations.

Now for Monster Hunter International by Larry Correia

A new author. It sounds fun.

That's a book I loved when I read it, about age 19 (20 years ago). Then I would have seen it thoroughly deserving of that spot, though I haven't (yet) reread it. I hope you get the same pleasure out if it I did then. I can't remember the book very well, but I remember the pleasure.

Cheers,
Marc

Oh, I loved that book when I read it a long time ago. In fact, I might like to re-read it now. I hope you enjoy it!

I'd already read it, but this week I received a hardback copy of Meeting of Minds Vol. 1 by Steve Allen, personally autographed by his widow, Jayne Meadows.

It appears that I may have received the last one!

I will treasure it as long as I live.

With glowing endorsements like those I'm looking forward to spending more quality time with the book later today.

Another book I might like to re-read some day...

Finished The Tomorrow People on my lunch break. Nothing stellar but it was a nice quick read. (Re)started Dragon Keeper on the train back home.
